    Process Engineer

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    The incumbent is expected to offer support to the Smelter Senior Process Engineer and Process Leader in terms of developing production plans, departmental strategies and operational directives.
    Responsible for daily troubleshooting, and optimisation of the blending, BBOC and induction furnaces.

    DIVERSITY OF WORK

    • Deliverance of capital projects assigned to him/her within specified time and costs. Ensure all engineering and governance requirements are met.

    DECISION MAKING

    • Decisions made must add value to the delivery of projects with respect to quality compliance, customer satisfaction, time and costs.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maximise throughputs across the Smelter Business Complex, in order to achieve its financial year targets.
    • Maximise plant utilization, resulting in minimal metal losses by assisting the Smelter Process Leader and Senior Process Engineer with improvements and recommendations.
    • Conduct technical investigation of processes.
    • Perform process improvement studies at the beginning of projects.
    • Prepare and assist with audit duties for the Primary and Secondary Processes sections.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • A completed Matric qualification.
    • Preference will be given to candidates in possession of a tertiary qualification in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering.
    • Must have at least acquired 5 years of working experience within a Metallurgical or Smelter environment, whereby at least 2 years was acquired from having served within a middle management position.

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

    • Computer skills proficiency – SAP and MS Office package.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Risk management skills – able to identify and eradicate risk.
    • Training skills – able to train others.
    • Have a clear understanding of the production processes.
    • Knowledge of equipment coupled with fault detection abilities.
    • SHEQ and radiation knowledge – able to diagnose faults.
    • Hydro and Pyro-metallurgy knowledge – thorough understanding of equipment and chemical thermodynamics.
    • Process knowledge – thorough understanding of material chemistry.
    • Scheduling knowledge – able to effectively schedule work for other colleagues.

    Operator

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    The Operator is expected to safely blend, melt/ smelt and atomise Smelter by-product materials (ITMs), high grade customer deposits and blister copper. This is to be done in accordance with the production plan and standard operating procedures. 
    Collection of material bags in order to blend in-line with the charge list.

    DECISION MAKING

    • Problems are resolved by reference to established procedures. Problems outside of established procedures are referred upwards.

    DIVERSITY OF WORK         

    • Assist with administrative duties, SHERQ requirements as well as skills transfer to maximise operational multi-tasking.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:              

    • Blending the charge according to the recipe to ensure that the melting can be obtained at the furnace.
    • Ensure that materials and fluxes are collected, and homogeneity is maintained so that material blended on the floor is according to the charge calculator.
    • Ensure that silos are always full as required by Arc Furnace. Material transfer to silos has to be accurate, stock levels are to be monitored and charges need to be blended well in time.
    • Maintain high housekeeping standards.
    • Ensure that all by-products generated are weighed and sent for sampling for metal balance purposes.
    • Participation during stock count to ensure correct labelling and proper evaluation of units. There should be no written-off bags found during stock count.
    • Crushing of materials for sampling and evaluation.
    • Ensure that the Arc Furnace availability is communicated immediately for optimised production.
    • Accurate reporting through production logs & performance feedback on shift basis to Control Room Co-ordinator and Arc Furnace Foreman.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • A completed Matric qualification.
    • Preference will be given to candidates who have at least 2 years’ work experience in a Smelting/Operational environment.

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

    • Can apply knowledge and skills required to perform a variety of primarily manual tasks.
    • Compute proficiency – MS Office and SAP.
    • Good communication skills (verbal and written) – effectively communicate technical knowledge to others.
    • Risk Management skills - able to identify and eradicate risk.
    • Organised thinking - able to plan and manage orders.
    • Work under pressure - able to work under extreme pressure from time-to-time.
    • Take initiative - able to work alone and bring about solutions.
    • Results driven and passion for continuous improvement.
    • Do troubleshooting on equipment and report equipment deviations to the Asset Care team via SAP notifications.
    • Fit to be trained and operate mobile equipment such as front-end loader, bobcat and forklift.
