Sanlam Group Technology is responsible for the provision of a digitally enabled technology service as a group COE, drive business and transformation and provide group-wide digital and data architecture. We operate the various technology platforms and shared services, ensure Cyber and Information Security resilience, and act as technology governance and risk orchestrator for technology across Sanlam.
What will you do?
As a member of the BI / Data Platform team, analyse, design and enable processes and solutions aimed at improving the ability of the delivery streams leveraging the data platform to deliver business value from data, orchestrating and automating the data analytics development and release pipeline to make it more flexible while maintaining a high level of quality.
This role enables change in the organisation by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders. The candidate will work in a platform enablement and delivery team, in an Agile environment with a specific focus on the Business Intelligence (BI) and/or Data domain.
What will make you successful in this role?
Analysis
Systems and data analysis of business value stream and/or platform requirements.
Document and maintain the set of system, functional and/or technical requirements together with the associated rationale, effort, decisions, dependencies and assumptions.
Development of technical specifications for product and process requirements, including integration mapping.
Manage traceability between the system requirements and derived artifacts including system models to the relevant detail.
Creation of the needed system designs as required, including but not limited to logical system design, Logical Data Models, high level and /or conceptual solution designs, UI prototypes, end user and reports.
Identification of potential risks/issues and give input to risk mitigation plan.
Scoping and estimation.
Ensure adequate tests are performed for all configuration and development tasks and ensure results are successful. Ensure testing yields an acceptable level of performance for the changes being delivered and the systems is not adversely affected.
Continuously assess own performance, seek timely and clear feedback and request training where appropriate.
Stakeholder Engagement
Cultivate and manage objective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including end-users, SME’s, project managers and senior staff members by providing input to validate business requirements.
Liaise and communicate the system requirements to the necessary audiences e.g. testers, developers, business analysts, infrastructure, production support, systems analyst (other areas of the business), etc.
Advise and enable platform and delivery workstreams data development and release pipeline.
Coaching/Mentorship
Coaching and mentoring of junior analysts.
Participate and contribute to a development culture where information regarding successes, issues, trends and ideas are actively shared.
Provides problem solving assistance to other team members.
Coach and assist junior team members.
DataOps
Defining and supporting the workspace process and technologies that others use to source, transform and manifest BI solutions.
Definition of, enablement and optimisation of effective data engineering and release processes, practices and tooling.
Enablement of a high-performance data analytics team that rapidly produces new analytics and flexibly responds to marketplace demands while maintaining impeccable quality.
Establishment and optimisation of environment and processes through which the delivery teams build the data products, including the monitoring of data pipelines and infrastructure as well as the governance of the data engineering practices.
Qualification
Diploma/Bachelor Degree (Information Systems; Statistics; Data or Computer Science; Engineering) or equivalent (preferred but not essential)

You will constantly be developing and setting new principles, standards, processes, procedures and guidelines for the wider BI community.
Communicate technical information to technical teams, as well as communicating challenges and solutions to project and operational leadership. An understanding of data management solutions and a keen sense of the strategic value of information to an organisation will be of importance. You will also be responsible for developing data warehousing blueprints, evaluating hardware and software platforms and integrating systems; translating business needs into long-term architecture solutions.

3- 8 years related experience
Application and data engineering background with a solid background in SQL is required
Data architecture design and delivery experience preferred
Experience in three (3) or more of the following areas is required:
Database technologies (e.g. SAP Hana, Teradata or similar) and database development (Views, Functions and Stored Procedure development)
Hadoop components including HDFS, Hive, Spark, Oozie and Impala
Object-oriented/object functional scripting languages: Python, Java, Scala or related.
ETL tools (e.g. SAP Data Services)
Event/Streaming based data pipelines (e.g. Kafka or Nifi)
Data warehousing (Kimball and Data Vault patterns are preferred) and dimensional data modelling (OLAP and MDX experience)

What will you do?
Enabling business
Responsible for supporting the business by ensuring that all SQL environments are running optimally
Take responsibility for capacity management and performance tuning of a database
Security and risk management of the SQL estate
Communication
Interface with multiple business users across the organization.
Work closely with the development teams - assist with any queries (performance tuning, best practices, troubleshoot logic issues etc)
Coaching
Review team members’ code and advise on enhancements
Assist with up skilling team members by assisting Jnr staff, system analysts, and application developers and showcasing new and interesting technologies/methodologies
Deployments
Ensure stable releases to Test and/or Live environments.
Manage ETL environment, assist in project deployments
What will make you successful in this role?
Matric
Relevant tertiary qualifications
Minimum 10 years extensive working experience in a SQL DBA role
Must have work experience with SQL security and a very good understanding on how to design and implement security roles for enterprise type databases
Must have experience in designing and building large/high volume transactional and analytical Databases
SQL SSAS deployment, security models and design knowledge are advantageous
Extensive knowledge of SSRS, SSAS, T-SQL and SSIS.
A solid understanding of how the SQL engine works
Solid understanding of performance tuning principles within SQL, SSAS, SSRS.
SQL High availability experience is critical. 5+ years of experience on SQL HA.
Must have SQL performance tuning experience on large systems
Must have solid T-SQL development skills.
Must have 2-3 years team lead/management experience, leading SQL DBAs
Qualification and Experience
Degree or Diploma with 10 to 12 years related experience.
