    Post - Doctoral Research Fellowship - BRIP - R 522A

    The South African Medical Research Councils Biomedical Research Innovation Platform requires a suitably qualified and experienced candidate. We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Biomedical Research Innovation Platform, an intra-mural research unit at the SAMRC. The person will cover the multifaceted aspects of the post, we require an energetic person with a strong theoretical and practical background in Analytical Chemistry.

    Responsibilities

    • Play an active role in wastewater-based epidemiology research at the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform.
    • Develop sample extraction and LC-MS/MS methods to identify and quantify pharmaceuticals and their metabolites and further transformation products (TPs) in wastewater and aquatic environmental samples.
    • Performing administration and field work tasks related to the wastewater project.

    Requirements

    • PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry or related science with suitable post-graduate training.
    • 3 years working experience in operating a liquid chromatograph (LC) coupled to a triple quadrupole spectrometer (MS/MS) or high-resolution mass spectrometer as well as sample preparation techniques.
    • Ability to work as a team member.
    • Sound communication and writing skills.

    Advantageous

    • Peer review articles relating to LC-MS/MS method development.
    • Good chromatographic and mass spectrometry interpretation skills.
    • Good knowledge in troubleshooting and maintaining an LC/MS system.
    • Experience with analyzing water or wastewater samples.
    • Driver’s license.

    Senior Study Nurse - R524A - ATODRU

    The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit is looking for an experienced, energetic and organized senior study nurse to work on project TRUST, a cohort study examining the impact of alcohol use on TB treatment outcomes. Study nurses will be responsible for the screening of participants, collection of blood and sputum samples, health chart review, and collection of behavioural data on tablets through REDCap, among other duties. Candidates will be based in Worcester full-time and will work at the study site as well as within local health facilities in Worcester.

    Responsibilities

    • Ensuring compliance with study protocols
    • Collection and preparation of biological specimens (blood, sputum, and urine) for analysis
    • Coordination of chest X-rays
    • Coordination of collection and transportation of biological specimens
    • Extraction of data from health charts
    • Completion of biobehavioural questionnaires on tablets
    • Liaison with collaborators and with Department of Health
    • Data management
    • Training of DOT workers and other project staff members

    Core Requirements

    • At least two to three years of relevant work experience as a study nurse (in research studies).
    • Diploma in General Nursing
    • Phlebotomy and centrifuge skills
    • Currently registered with the South African Nursing Council
    • Speak fluent Afrikaans and English

    Advantageous

    • Valid South African driver’s license

    Successful candidates will be provided with relevant on-the-job training. This is a one-year contract position, with the option of renewal if key performance areas are met, and funding is available.

    Senior Research Technologist: Quality Assurance Officer - HIDRU - R 513B

    The HIV and other Infectious Diseases Research Unit (HIDRU) seeks to appoint a Quality Assurance Officer to conduct internal monitoring at clinical research sites within the Durban region, to ensure compliance with SA and ICH GCP and HSP requirements. Quality assurance activities will include working within the framework of approved protocols and regulatory documentation. The Quality Assurance officer will work across multiple research projects including COVID-19 studies and work across multiple sites.

    Responsibilities:

    • Internal monitoring of clinical trial data using approved protocols and standard operating procedures as per the clinical quality management plan
    • Review 100% informed consent forms and locators
    • Submit internal monitoring reports timeously and debrief study investigators and site staff on common findings and trends
    • Assist with preparation for external audits and monitoring
    • Review study related regulatory documentation including local ethics, SAHPRA and sponsor correspondence.

    Core Requirements:

    • A relevant 3-year degree in Health/Social Science or similar relevant qualification or higher
    • At least 3 years clinical research experience
    • At least 1-2 years’ experience with quality assurance activities in clinical trials

    Advantageous:

    • Valid code 8 driver’s license
    • Valid recent GCP and HSP certificate
    • Willingness to work outside normal working hours when required
    • Work with meticulous attention to detail to ensure good data quality
    • Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent computer skills in MS Office packages
    • The ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality
    • The ability to work independently, under pressure and honor deadlines.
