    Instrumentation Superintendent

    Purpose of Role

    • To manage and lead the implementation regarding all aspects of instrumentation operations by driving adherence to legal and compliance and implement instrumentation strategies and policies whilst ensuring effective asset management and maintenance for the department.

    Role Context

    Operational Management

    • Manage the implementation and alignment of Control & Instrumentation management strategies across the plant by overseeing the execution of operational plans to optimise performance and ensure cost efficiency.
    • Keep abreast of changes in relevant guidelines and other legislation, to make recommendations where policies, processes and/or procedures require amendment.
    • Manage the implementation of policies, processes, Operational and maintenance procedures that are within the respective Department aimed at the enhancement of service delivery and overall productivity within the Department.
    • Manage the maintenance, calibration, repair and functioning of all field instrumentation equipment and control systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.
    • Implement preventive maintenance programs to minimise equipment downtime and optimise performance in line with health, safety and environmental regulations in instrumentation operations and TM’s standards.
    • Implement the troubleshooting and diagnostic process with regards to complex Control & Instrumentation issues and set up action plans to minimise disruptions in operations.
    • Manage the execution of critical daily maintenance tasks including the planning of shutdown activities to keep equipment well-conditioned and safe to operate to optimise instrumentation performance.
    • Manage the implementation of clear operational plans and principles with regards to asset management to ensure safe and reliable asset care and optimum availability of plant equipment.

    Financial Management

    • Analyse all relevant Department data and report on Departmental trends and operating requirements to determine funding requirements for the financial year.
    • Monitor short-term Departmental budgets by scrutinising and aligning spend within the Department, to support and drive effective and efficient functioning within budgetary constraints.
    • Manage team’s expenditure against budget allocations, requesting appropriate reallocation as required, to manage the prevention of unnecessary spend.
    • Comply with all financial, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and other Tharisa Minerals (TM) regulations and policies by facilitating the right actions, to reduce financial risk in the Department.
    • Maintain the Control & Instrumentation department’s operational budget including forecasting and cost control measures to minimise expenditure and ensure operations are adequately budgeted for. 
    • Allocate resources (both financial and non-financial) including the sourcing and evaluation of vendors for Control & Instrumentation products, tools and services to meet project deadlines and operational requirements.

    People Management

    • Create and maintain a conducive work environment by appropriately applying Human Resources policies and procedures to ensure optimum performance is realised for the benefit of the Department and, by extension, the organisation.
    • Lead the team according to TM’s leadership principles and values throughout the entire employee life cycle (performance management, reward etc) to ensure, inter alia, a high-performance culture.
    • Coach mentor, guide, and provide leadership for the team, sharing impactful knowledge and identifying and recommending opportunities for growth and improvement to drive the success of the team.
    • Set clear goals and objectives for the team, monitor progress and provide regular feedback and guidance to achieve the set goals in line with TM’s regulations and standards.
    • Manage employee performance and forecasting the skills required to meet business demands and ensure training and upskilling initiatives to ensure the team remains competent and fit for purpose within their roles.

    Stakeholder Relations

    • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure information, advice or opinions on relevant matters is made available and/or communicated with all relevant stakeholders, to manage expectations and timelines.
    • Utilise opportunities presented to enhance the relationship between management, unions and employees, and implement processes to maximise a collaborative working relationship.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, engineering and maintenance to address instrumentation related issues and provide advice and recommendations to ensure resolution and continuous improvement.

    Compliance, Risk and Safety

    • Keep abreast of industry legislative and regulatory changes and drive the alignment of governance, risk and compliance frameworks to ensure adherence to regulations and policies including the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996.
    • Maintain the risk profile for the instrumentation department to manage critical risks and ensure feedback integration.
    • Implement a work ethos across the department that is committed to safeguarding employee safety, health and wellbeing and take remedial actions where necessary to minimise incidents.
    • Gather and record all maintenance and calibration activities, equipment performance and repairs to ensure compliance with company policies, procedures and regulatory standards.

    • Trade Certificate in Measurement, Control and Instrumentation

    Instrumentation Technician

    Purpose of Role

    • To implement and deliver on all aspects of instrumentation operations by adhering to and ensuring adherence to legal and compliance with regards to instrumentation operations and policies whilst ensuring effective asset management and maintenance for the department.

    Role Context

    Survey Technician

    Purpose of Role

    • To conduct and participate in field surveys, using surveying instruments and technology, to collect data related to mining operations. To ensure survey activities comply with the relevant Acts, Regulations and contractual agreements, supporting informed management decision making.

    Role Context

    Compliance, Risk and Safety

    • Attend daily safety meetings with management to discuss risk assessments prior to any survey work being conducted, to identify and report any substandard conditions.
    • Identify and report on unauthorised usage of surface areas, to ensure adherence to all mine standards procedures and legal requirements.

    Operational Efficiencies

    • Import and export electronic information from other systems to resolve internal data requests in the required format.

    Resource Management

    • Provide input into required changes in resources (financial or non-financial) to enable the achievement of team and/or own objectives.
    • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes.
    • Request and allocate required assets and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs.
    • Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
    • Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently.
    • Record the usage of survey assets to support the effective maintenance of the Survey Asset Register.
    • Inspect surveying instruments and technology, reporting on maintenance support required, to maintain quality surveying equipment. 

    Stakeholder Relations

    • Communicate with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of speciality. Liaise across the relevant Departments by engaging with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure all stakeholders remain abreast of Departmental objectives, any potential derailers are appropriately managed and duplication of work is avoided.
    • Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships.

    Surveying

    • Conduct daily aerial surveys and monthly volume measurements, using surveying instruments and technologies, to collect relevant data within the pit.
    • Process collected data and use as input into the design of drill patterns.
    • Provide subject matter expertise during Land Management Programs to address any survey issues identified according to the survey designs.
    • Update the water volumes in the pit, calculating the volume of pools of water, to support production planning.
    • Monitor the construction of new surface structures to identify and report on potential risks.
    • Set up the theodolite on a co-ordinated and elevated survey beacon to enable the measurement of horizontal and vertical angles.
    • Identify and report the need for a survey beacon to be co-ordinated and elevated to the Pit Surveyor, to ensure there is placement for the theodolite.
    • Conduct Tacheometric Location by Electronic Theodolite and Global Positioning System to precisely measure angles in the horizontal and vertical plans which support mapping and construction surveys.
    • Conduct identities location of surface reef mining floor terrain, stockpiles, dumps, roads, trenches, etc., using surveying instruments and technology to set up reference points as benchmarks.
    • Conduct installation of profiles (grades boxes), under supervision, on level and inclined plane to aid construction and excavation to planned elevations
    • Obtain the relevant measurements to assist with the creation of CAD drawings.
    • Locate and measure new structures in the field to support the DMR plans.
    • Survey completed drill holes (As-drills) to measure precise information about the depths of the hole, providing valuable extra information about the soil.
    • Mark the location of new works, by staking out drill patterns, reef outcrops, crests, toe positions, and any field and in-pit staking that is required to assist the Survey and Production Departments.
    • Design and prepare survey plans and reports, calling on specialist survey expertise if required, to advise on viability of workings.
    • Deliver on spatial compliance via electronic plans to improve alignment of short-and long-term mine planning at the mine.
    • Perform manual work including assisting with bush clearing and the carrying of stakes and other heavy items to support Field Surveys.

    Job Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Matric (Grade 12)
    • Chamber of Mines Elementary Certificate in Surveying (NQF5)
    • Chamber of Mines Advanced Certificate in Surveying (NQF6)/National Diploma (NQF6) in Surveying is advantageous
    • Driving Licence

    Job specific experience:

    • Minimum of between two to three (2-3) years relevant experience .
    • Experience using CAD/Model Maker/Deswik related software

    R&D Operator

    Purpose of Role

    • To execute all tasks and activities in the process plant regarding the operation of laboratory test work and improvement initiatives to ensure adherence to specifications and monitoring production parameters to enable the achievement of metallurgical targets within set parameters and maintaining plant stability in adherence to safety standards in line with the MHSA and Tharisa Risk Management protocols

    Role Context

    Operational Management

    • Execute pilot plant test work activities including analyses and ensure alignment to stipulated recipes to contribute to the achievement of production / metallurgical targets
    • Monitor, measure and analyse data for reporting during set intervals and suggest operational adjustments as needed to ensure production quotas and quality standards are met or exceeded
    • Monitor and guide plant attendant regarding their execution of tasks and utilisation of plant equipment within defined scope ensuring adherence to the production plans to achieve process stability and efficiency
    • Provide physical and technical support during plant and report operational delays and process inefficiencies to minimise bottlenecks and plant lock up
    • Participate in the maintenance and repair of all machinery and equipment within the process plant by actively testing and reporting defects to ensure continuous productivity and minimise downtime caused by breakdowns
    • Document any identified breakdowns and report to management for escalation and maintenance scheduling
    • Contribute to the preparation of reports on production, safety and maintenance activities by recording equipment inspections, repairs and maintenance activities to ensure compliance
    • Work across multiple sections in the plant to enable inter-links and integration with the laboratory regarding processes to ensure timely and efficient execution of tasks to maintain plant stability
    • Contribute to the implementation of corrective actions within established guidelines to address deviations from specifications including the adjustment and verification of parameters
    • Conduct pre-work assessments to ensure all equipment and area of work identifying any risks and concerns and escalate to supervisor ensuring all safety requirements are met

    Resource Management

    • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes
    • Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed
    • Request and allocate required equipment and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs
    • Address team dynamics and champion teamwork and synergy to create a positive work environment and improve employee relations
    • Maintain a comprehensive checklist to consistently check equipment and identify need for spares sourcing and maintenance or replacement

    Stakeholder Relations

    • Engage with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of specialisation, as directed by the Manager
    • Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships
    • Collaborate with Evaluation Foreman to contribute to the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives to enhance plant performance during shifts
    • Collaborate with the maintenance department in order to ensure a world class maintenance culture is established and maintained on the plant

    Compliance, Risk and Safety

    • Adhere to a set plant specific Risk Management Policy and appropriate Procedures and Standards (Codes of Practice) during shifts
    • Participate in pre-shift safety discussion to raise awareness and promote a safety-first mindset to maintain safety awareness of hazards and behaviours and reduce incidents
    • Participate in relevant and necessary training to ensure consistent adherence to safety guidelines all the time to ensure
    • Maintain good housekeeping in area of accountability in line with safety standards and procedures
    • Maintain a proactive approach to all safety protocols by creating awareness of hazards and behaviour in order to adhere to compliance to minimise risk of accidents and injuries within the plant
    • Participate in collaborative efforts to adhere to and execute drills and escape procedures in case of emergencies and operational requirements to mitigate risks and fatalities

    Job Requirements
    Qualifications:

    • Grade 12/ NQF Level 4 (Maths & Science)
    • National Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or Chemistry or working towards P1/P2 Experiential training

    Job-specific experience:

    • One year’s experience as an Operator in a metallurgical process operation including PGM flotation
    • Previous R&D experience with Metallurgical Test works (Advantageous)
    • Experience in mass and energy balances
