    Function General Manager - Durban, Pretoria

    Key Responsibilities shall include the following, but not limited to:

    • To guide the team in the Region by offering operational, technical, and business development direction in alignment with SJ Group's vision and values. This can be accomplished by recruiting, developing, leading, and managing employees to meet global operational plans. Ensure excellence in all operational, technical, and business development activities within the portfolio.
    • Manage the profit and loss for the sub-sector in the Region by achieving financial targets including profit targets, budgeted fees, project contribution, and overhead targets; Commercial awareness, timely submission of invoices and financial reports, timely payment collection and management of lock-up to agreed levels; Fee and contribution targets are met and managed effectively.
    • Ensure capability development and mobilization of Regional sub-sector resources by ensuring all staff working in your area of responsibility understand the Company’s Code of Conduct and Business Integrity Policy and associated procedures; Compliance risks associated with your area of responsibility are understood and managed effectively; Implementing the appropriate processes and controls within your area of responsibility for managing compliance risk effectively; Managing the non-compliance and ensuring the region understands and follows the Company policies.

    Recommended Qualifications, Skills, And Experience:

    • Appropriate engineering degree/higher degree from an accredited university/college
    • 15 - 20 years’ experience in relevant sectors
    • Experience in senior engineering management and/or senior design management positions
    • within a multi-disciplinary environment 
    • Proven track record in business development, proposals, and tendering
    • Strong client relationship and stakeholder management skills

    Engineer Construction and Pavements

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Supervise and manage small teams, including Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, and Graduates.
    • Mentor team members in relevant software tools and check their work.
    • Develop increased design ability and quality.
    • Draft technical reports of acceptable quality and presentational standards.
    • Present/represent technical work and draft responses to bids with assistance on commercial aspects.
    • Develop knowledge of commercial aspects of project management and Functional Unit technologies and markets.
    • Check and inspect constructed works for compliance with design and specifications.
    • Handle construction administration and monitoring.
    • Prepare tenders for construction, including Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and specifications.
    • Develop internal standards and implement them.
    • Provide solutions to complex engineering problems.
    • Perform design work duties under the supervision of a Professional Engineer/Scientists/Other Professionals.
    • Work with clients and municipal line departments to capture their requirements.
    • Compile contract documentation and specifications, including measurement files.
    • Handle client invoicing, project auditing (if assigned role of quality auditor), and project management.
    • Manage project financial forecasting, budgets, and associated resource planning.
    • Conduct draughting activities.
    • Maintain regular client contacts without Senior Managers.
    • Indirectly responsible for term tender budgets.

    Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required :

    • Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from an accredited university/college.
    • Minimum 3 years of practical experience.
    • Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets.
    • Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software.
    • Professionalism.

    Civil Engineer (Urban Development)

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Supervise and lead small teams, including Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, and Graduates.
    • Mentor Technicians, Graduate Technologists, and/or Graduate Engineers in relevant software tools.
    • Review and verify the work of team members.
    • Enhance design capabilities and ensure quality standards.
    • Prepare technical reports with a focus on technical and presentational excellence.
    • Make technical decisions and provide solutions during project development.
    • Assist in drafting responses to bids, with a particular emphasis on commercial aspects.
    • Develop a thorough understanding of commercial aspects of project management.
    • Acquire knowledge of Functional Unit technologies and markets.
    • Inspect constructed works for compliance with design and specifications.
    • Oversee construction administration and monitoring.
    • Prepare tenders for construction, including Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and specifications.
    • Develop tender bids to clients, including draft cost estimates.
    • Perform design work in areas such as roads, stormwater, water, sewer, and earthworks under the supervision of a Professional Engineer/Scientist/Other Professional.
    • Apply SMEC’s systems and procedures and ensure their adherence.
    • Collaborate with clients and municipal line departments to understand and address their requirements.
    • Compile contract documentation and specifications, including measurement files.
    • Handle client invoicing.
    • Contribute to project auditing if assigned the role of a quality auditor.

    Recommended Qualifications, Skills, And Experience:

    • Bachelor of Engineering degree or higher from an accredited university/college.
    • Minimum of 3 years of practical experience.
    • Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets.
    • Knowledge of basic project management principles.
    • Expertise in the design of municipal services, including roads, earthworks, sewer, water, and stormwater.
    • Proficiency in CIVIL 3D and AUTOCAD Software Package.
