Description

• Providing strategic research direction for the Soil Science programme in harmony with the ARC’s Strategic Plan.
• Pro-active personnel management in terms of application and effective utilization to maintain and strengthen the core of expertise within the Soil Science discipline.
• Recruitment of funding and project management in an agricultural and natural resource environment, both nationally and internationally.
• Acquisition and maintenance of research equipment, computers, peripherals and specialized software.
• Mentoring young scientists/technicians/postgraduate students and discharging duties in a multidisciplinary research team.
• Monitoring and evaluation of research and technology development projects, and maintenance of scientific quality standards.
• Technology transfer.
• Scientific networking, both nationally and internationally.

Requirements

• PhD in Soil Science/Agronomy or equivalent.
• The candidate must further have a proven research background across various fields of Soil Science.
• Ability to work with communities and conduct fieldwork.
• Ability to draft research proposals and generate external project funding.
• Willingness to travel away from home for intermediate periods.
• Experience in postgraduate student supervision and mentoring, as well as undergraduate student training.
• Registration with SACNASP (or evidence that registration could be obtained).
• Good communication skills (written and verbal).
• Valid driver’s license (code 08/EB).

Description

• Strategic research direction for the Geoinformatics programme in harmony with the ARC’s Strategic Plan.
• Undertake the development of new research projects which includes proper planning, design implementation, and financial control.
• Monitoring and evaluation of research and technology development projects, and maintenance of scientific quality standards.
• Postgraduate student supervision and research team leadership.
• Seek new clients and develop proposals in collaboration with other researchers and technicians.
• Valuate research needs, develop, plan and conduct research projects.
• Undertake scientific networking, nationally and internationally.
• Optimally utilize and supervise human resources allocated to relevant projects.
• Conduct technology transfer activities related to Geoinformatics.

Requirements

• PhD in Geographical Information Systems (GIS)/Remote Sensing or PhD in Natural Sciences with a strong background in UAV/Drone work, Modelling/Statistics, Matlab/R/Python, GIS/Remote Sensing, Data Analysis and Crop Modelling.
• Minimum of 5 years’ post-PhD experience.
• Minimum of eight peer-reviewed publications.
• The candidate must have a proven research background in agriculture and climate related disciplines.
• The candidate should have previous experience with GIS/Remote Sensing, UAV/drone work, modelling/statistics, programming and crop modelling.
• A proven track record of external income generation for research.
• Ability to work with communities and discharge duties in a multi-disciplinary research team.
• Willingness to travel away from home for intermediate periods to conduct fieldwork.
• Good communication skills (written and verbal).
• Valid driver’s license (code 08/EB).
