    Senior Software Development Engineer - EC2 Placement

    Description

    • Build the systems that optimize how EC2 matches requests for Instances with the underlying compute capacity. EC2 Placement is seeking talented engineers to build the online and offline optimization systems for compute workload scheduling, and the customer capabilities to better manage those workloads. Amazon EC2 provides on-demand scalable compute capacity, and powers some of the largest services in the world. You will collaborate with a top-tier community of engineers to build systems to improve how customers are able to access EC2 compute resources. The successful candidate will have strong software engineering experience, with a passion for thinking about, building and testing distributed systems. You have an interest in how Machine Learning and other optimization techniques can be applied to large-scale problems. You have demonstrated experience building large-scale systems and taking leadership to make sure your systems work well. With strong engineering fundamentals, an analytical and data-driven approach to your work, and strong communication skills, you have the ability to collaborate well within and across teams to deliver results.     Basic Qualifications

    • Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent working experience

    Engineering Operations Technician Intern

    Description

    Amazon is looking for an energetic, detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) team in Cape Town, South Africa on a six month Internship Program.
    The DCEO team are a committed group who work to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services. Specifically, this team works to ensure that the data center's MEP operates at 100% availability while maintaining first-class customer service to the teams and groups within the data centers. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPS’s, PDU’s, AHU’s, EF's, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFD’s, and building monitoring systems.

    The Data Center Engineering Operations Technician (EOT) Intern will assist permanent AWS staff with the operation and maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center environment. The EOT Intern can serve as a technical resource to support Amazon within its owned and operated data centers. Data center equipment that supports mission-critical servers must maintain better than 99.999% up-time. EOT Interns are also tasked with driving innovation while reducing operational costs in the facilities.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist under supervision with the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment.
    • Under supervision perform root cause analysis of equipment failures.
    • Under supervision troubleshooting of facility and rack-level events within internal SLA.
    • Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to while performing work.
    • Able to work a 12 hour rotating shift pattern, which will include the need to work days and nights.
    • Take daily operational readings of all mechanical and electrical equipment.
    • They will need to partake in training courses, provided both internally and externally, in line with the expectations of the B-BBEE Internship Skills Development program.

    Physical Requirements

    • Walk job sites in uneven terrain.
    • Work at heights and from ladders.
    • Regularly lift and/or move up to 22 kilograms; and participate in group lifts of 23 kilograms or more.
    • Work shifts longer than eight hours in duration.
    • Coordinate body movements when using tools or equipment.

    Data Center Technician Intern

    Description

    Amazon is looking for an energetic, detail-orientated individual to join our Data Center Operations (DCO) team in Cape Town, South Africa on a six month Internship Program.
    This role is a unique opportunity to work in some of the most cutting edge data centers in the world. Amazon data centers are large-scale high-density centers where you will be working on changing the face of Cloud technology in the region.

    A Data Center Technician will work as part of the Operations team whose primary responsibility is the maintenance and upkeep of the data center infrastructure. The candidate may be the primary point of contact for both internal customers (for example: Network Engineers, Systems Engineers, Software Developers, Database Engineers, Technical Operations) and external customers (Hardware Vendors, Contractors, Service Providers among others). The position is full time and shift based, operating on a 24*7 rotation. The ideal candidate is someone with hands-on hardware experience.

    Responsibilities

    • Work and meet SLA’s against assigned trouble tickets via a directed workflow
    • First line touch point for hardware troubleshooting and technical issues
    • Perform regular server hardware repairs(drives, motherboards etc)
    • Carry out routine network, server hardware and OS related repairs
    • Work with cross-functional teams on a regular basis to complete routine work
    • Engage with Smart Hands in EU Regional POPs
    • Adhere to security and safety best practices in the data center
    • Participate in Data Center power & cooling events
    • Participate in team meetings for metric analysis and daily/weekly goals achievement
    • Identify and help create documentation for use globally
    • Identify and help create process improvements relevant to the data center environment
    • Perform server upgrades, rebuilds, scheduled works as required
    • Interact with third party vendors & contractors
    • Contribute to the development of other team members
       

    Basic Qualifications

    • A current college graduate, not yet in full time employment who has obtained a national diploma in I.T
    • Intermediate knowledge of computer hardware systems.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, displaying excellent time management skills.
    • Ability to take direction from both a directed work system and/or a team lead.
    • Able to lift/move up to 20kg equipment on a daily basis.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Logistics Intern

Amazon Web Services is seeking bright, motivated, hardworking individuals to fill datacenter Logistics Specialist positions. The ideal candidate possesses a strong work ethic, attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines, and a commitment to Operational Excellence.
    The Logistics Specialist reviews datacenter inventory, in-bound shipments, and ongoing demand to ensure that proper stock levels are maintained in the all locations to support build and repair activities. Working with the Logistics Manager, they create plans to optimize the flow of parts through their lifecycle; tracking inventory location, movement, age, and turns. They work closely with datacenter Operations Technicians and datacenter Engineers to fulfill parts quickly and accurately. They work with Procurement and Hardware Engineering to purchase new parts and interface directly with vendors to process RMAs and receive replacements. They are responsible for accurate data entry and resolving questions from peer organizations.

    The ideal Logistics Specialist will dive deep into data to understand everything about the datacenter asset lifecycle. Working with software development teams, they will contribute to continuous process improvements to deliver on our goals of high availability and low cost. They maintain up-to-date metrics dashboards and will create reports for internal and external suppliers and management as required.
    Responsibilities can include manual tasks, such as assembling, addressing, stamping and arranging for the shipment of merchandise and materials. They may also assist in daily scheduling of deliveries and pick-ups to and from production locations. In handling incoming shipments, he or she may have to unpack boxes and verify contents. The Logistic Specialist will be required to keep precise records of all commodities going in and out of company.
    Logistics Specialist are expected to understand all aspects of production, adhere to strict safety standards, maintain very high quality, and be willing and able to work on powered equipment (i.e forklift or cherry picker).

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor Degree 3.5+ year experience in logistics, Strong understanding of shipping & receiving, inventory and warehousing practices.
    • Experience in ERP system and other statistical analysis tools.
    • Strong communication and inter-personal skills
    • Strong understanding of Logistics practices.
    • Effectiveness communicate with international counterparts.
    • Must be able to lift loads of up to 49 pounds and carry them for short distances
    • May participate in group lifts of 50 pounds or more
    • Must be able to demonstrate lean process.
    • Familiarity with producing process documentation
    • Push or pull heavy objects into position
    • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Must hold a recognized material management professional qualification.
    • Knowledge of IT Industry Logistics would be an advantage
    • Experience using metrics to perform analyses
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Punctuality; excellent organizational skills for orderliness; and ability to focus on multiple tasks simultaneously to ensure department objectives are met
    • Demonstrated positive work attitude & leadership skills
    • Demonstrated ability to perform above minimum for extended periods of time
    • Commitment to a culture of safety & security.
    • A track record of creative problem solving using software systems and the desire to create and build new processes.
