    Medical Officer: Radiology (Helen Joseph Hospital)

    Requirements :

    • MBChB, appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as Medical Practitioner, HPCSA registration as an independent medical practitioner and must be post Community Service. Preference will be given to those who have completed Part 1 of the FCRad examination.

    Duties :

    • The incumbent will be responsible to interview, investigate, diagnose and oversee the treatment of patient related administrative duties, participating in all activities of the discipline in relation to teaching, participating in departmental audit activates, preparing and writing of reports, liaison and communication services and community liaison.
    • Supervising junior doctors is required (undergraduate students, interns and community service doctors). Performance of commuted overtime may be requested. Attendance of relevant administrative meeting like multi-disciplinary team meetings, near miss meeting and completing MEDICO Legal Documents timeously (e.g. Death certificate) is required.
    • Improve quality of care by providing appropriate clinical care. Reduce medical litigation by exercising good clinical ethos. Implement and monitor adherence to National Core Standards (norms and standards).
    • Participate in multidisciplinary team to the management of patients. Performance of practical procedures relevant to the care of patients. Participation in departmental meetings, journal clubs, case presentations, lectures and ward rounds.
    • Ensure that administration and record keeping is done in the department. Rendering of after-hour (night, weekend and public holiday) duties to provide continuous uninterrupted care of patients.
    • Medical Officers will inter alia be responsible for rendering of clinical services, assessment and treatment of patients. Medical Officers will be rotated through related departments in the hospitals. Medical Officers will also be expected to rotate to Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.

    Medical Specialist Radiology (Helen Joseph Hospital)

    Requirements :

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal specialty. Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in a Radiology and current registration for 2025/2026.

    Duties :

    • The incumbent will be responsible to interview, investigate, diagnose and oversee the treatment of patients. Improve quality of care by providing appropriate clinical care supervising of junior medical staff.

    Medical Registrar: Public Health Unit (Johannesburg Health District)

    Requirements :

    • An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Practitioner and current registration.
    • The following will be added advantages: At least two years of relevant work experience after registration with the HPCSA as an independent Medical Practitioner post-community service, and a relevant post-graduate master’s qualification.

    Duties :

    • The Registrar post is a training post. The registrar training programme runs over four years. The training includes working, as part of experiential learning, at rotation sites that include the Johannesburg health district, national health institutes and other service delivery sites within, and affiliated to, the Gauteng Department of Health.
    • It also includes further training withing the Department of Community Health, School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, to facilitate completion of a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Public Health Medicine as well as other requirements directed by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, to become a Fellow (Specialist) of the College of Public Health Medicine (CPHM) upon successful completion of FCPHM exams.

    Medical Specialist Post (Sub Speciality) Grade 1-3: Psychiatry (Tara the H. Moross Centre)

    Requirements :

    • A medical MBBCh or equivalent degree with an appropriate qualification in psychiatry (FC Psych (SA), MMed (Psych) or equivalent qualification recognised by the HPCSA), which allows registration as a specialist psychiatrist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Current registration with the HPCSA as an independent specialist psychiatrist.

    Duties :

    • Provide a direct clinical service and manage a psychiatric inpatient or outpatient unit. The provision of care, treatment, and rehabilitation to mental health care users within the framework of the Mental Health Care Act (No 17 of 2002); involvement in other general psychiatry work as needed.
    • Provide outreach services to District Health Services and District/ Regional hospitals. Teaching and training of medical students, medical officers and psychiatry registrars, as well as other personnel (e.g. nurses, etc.).

    Medical Officer Sessional: Emergency Medicine (Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital)

    Requirements :

    • Medical Qualification: MBBCh (or equivalent). Registration with HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner at the time of starting employment. ALS Courses, qualifications: Minimum of 2 current ALS courses of which one must be a medical course (e.g. ACLS, AMLS) and one must be a Trauma course (ATLS, ITLS or EMATT) (allowance of 3 months post-expiration); or DipPEC in lieu of ALS courses.
    • Basic Ultrasound course beneficial. Beneficial: Candidates with DA/DipHIV and/or FCEM Part 1 primary exams will score higher in short-listing and interviews.     • Shift work in the Emergency Departments of the joint academic and clinical department of Emergency Medicine, including rotations between Helen Joseph Tertiay Hospital (HJTH) and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH).
    • Manage a variety of Emergency Medicine clinical cases including medical, surgical, trauma. Promote evidence-based patient care. Clinical supervision and training of junior staff. Administrative duties pertinent to the practice of Emergency Medicine (including medico-legal documentation).

    Head of Unit: Anaesthetics (Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital)

    Requirements :

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist: Anaesthesia. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Anaesthesia and proof of current registration.
    • A minimum of 3 years appropriate experience in Anaesthesia post registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist. A post specialist qualification will be an advantage.     • Ensure that clinical services are provided. Active participation in administrative duties of the department which include planning, budgeting, PMDS, student assessments. Comply with the Performance and Development System (Contracting, quarterly reviews and final assessments).
    • To collaborate and assist the HOD of Anaesthesiology at Wits and the Cluster Hospitals whenever needed, in service delivery, teaching and training as an outreach programme.
    • Ensure that appropriate, ethical and quality research is performed in the department as part of a wider agenda to explore improvements in health care in the Gauteng Province and South Africa as a whole with publication of the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
    • As part of the University’s responsibility, sufficient and quality teaching must be provided to undergraduates (medical students) and postgraduates (Registrars).
    • Teach students in areas of personal special interest and expertise. Participate in the Anaesthesiology examinations of the College of Medicine South Africa. Ensure the employment of the previously disadvantaged individuals in terms of race, gender and disability to enhance equity.
    • Perform commuted overtime as per departmental requirement. Contribute to departmental planning, budgeting and procurement processes as well as monitoring and evaluation.
