    Shift Superintendent Energy

    As an Shift Superintendent Energy you will be responsible for:

    Plant Operations

    • Lead a shift-based team and manage plant operations to maximize resources (raw materials, energy, people).
    • Execute production activities, including start-ups, shutdowns, checks, log sheets, and trend analysis.
    • Assess and manage abnormal plant conditions to ensure stability and continuity.
    • Recommend maintenance, upgrades, or replacement of equipment to optimize production efficiency.

    What are we looking for?

    Temp: Reliever Recovery

    Description

    We are hiring! 

    • We’re on the lookout for an experienced Temp: Reliever Recovery to assist production in reducing overtime by providing leave/training relief.

    As a Temp: Reliever Recoveryyou will be responsible for:

    Forester - Khulisa

    Description

    We are hiring! 

    • We're on the lookout for an experienced Forester - Khulisa to oversee and coordinate the implementation and achievement of operational plans and targets for silviculture and wood fibre delivery within budget and SHEQ parameters and ensure sustainable fibre supply to markets.

    As a Forester (Khulisa), you will be responsible for:

    • Prepare re-establishment Annual Plan Operations (APO) using Total Unplanted (TUP); Silviculture and Harvesting APO to ensure the re-establishment budget is implemented and TUP targets are achieved
    • Prepare land & re-establish (planting and coppice) according to Sappi’s BOP standards and quality expectations using the RMS; APO (silviculture and harvesting) to achieve Temporary Unplanted targets within budget constraints; lower risk exposure and improve efficiencies.
    • Monitor and manage plant use efficiency by tracking consumption against order including confirmed infield plantings to ensure plants are accounted for and costs are within budget
    • Track and monitor seedlings tray movement by keeping an up-to-date record of deliveries at transit nursery and nursery returns to ensure establishments are within budget constraints
    • Prepare maintenance APO using silviculture and harvesting APO together with TUP to ensure that implementation of APO is timeous to keep sots within budget
    • Develop a phased-harvest plan per compartment using the harvesting APO working with both the grower and the contractor to ensure shared responsibility and guarantee rateable Woodfibre supply to the market
    • Conduct a risk assessment per compartment pre- and interim harvesting operation to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards
    • Monitor Woodfibre quality and production rates by conducting interim operational inspections to ensure adherence to daily production targets and Mill quality specifications
    • Assist growers to identify fire associated risks and in implementing fire control measures using RMS to ensure the effective protection of people, plantations and other assets from wild plantation fires
    • Prepare and integrate alien plant management plan in the crop maintenance plan by conducting infield infestation assessment levels to ensure growers’ operations comply with legal requirements
    • Ensure that relations with communities and other internal & external stakeholders are effectively maintained & managed to ensure company image is upheld, risks mitigated, and relationships enhanced.
    • Maintain a professional relationship with suppliers’ service providers, and ensure that quality, delivery and compliance standards as set out in the job instruction system and Sappi BOP standards are adhered to.

    Forestry Manager Khulisa

    Description

    • Sappi Forests requires a Forestry Manager - Khulisa to manage sustainable wood fibre supply into the various Sappi markets; balanced supply according to market demand; grow local enterprise and supply capacity to support growth whilst developing and growing local economy through facilitating cooperation by all stakeholders and build synergies with relevant departments. This position will oversee KZN South.
    • This role reports to the General Manager: Khulisa.

    The main responsibilities of this job are:

    • Assess & review the re-establishment program (planting & coppice regeneration), monitor the placement of the plant order with Nurseries, ensure the annual plan of operations (planting; weeding and fire protection) is aligned to budget and implemented; ensure the Temporary Unplanted “TUP” targets are achieved within budget constraints to ensure sustainable wood fibre supply and profits to stakeholders.
    • Evaluate quality maintenance of all activities by conducting monthly infield audits (assess stocks planted and harvested; weed maintenance and fire preparations) on a minimum 10% of the months to maintain silvicultural standards; minimise risk and loss through timeous intervention.
    • Ensure that all suppliers are informed of forecasted FDI and resources are readily available to immediately respond in the event of a fire to minimise costs and loss
    • Facilitate the development of cordial relationships between suppliers; their neighbours and the local business community through local farmer associations and Fire Protection associations membership to ensure collaboration and cooperation between stakeholders and improve response disastrous events.
    • Encourage suppliers to invest in equipment that is owned by farming community cooperation through farmers association or FPA to improve access and availability and profits to the growers.
    • Ensure all operations comply with service level agreement by doing infield service audit checks to guarantee quality and delivery of value for money
    • Ensure that all projects have the necessary required resources and capacity to achieve targets by determining scope of annual activities and recruit and or develop the required skills
    • Ensure adherence to the chain of custody principles through spot audits on a proportionate percentage of supplied wood fibre volume for the month monitoring the source “infield audits” and the supplied volume versus contractual volume to combat criminal activity
    • Monitor loan recovery by prioritising wood fibre on the annual harvesting APO before spot timber and monitor infield stocks versus sales and TCS recovery reports reducing loss to the company
    • Monitor infield versus depots stock level reports to ensure rateable wood fibre delivery to the Mill and achieve targets
    • Conduct interim infield inspections to monitor and ensure adherence to safety and Mill quality specifications to proactively mitigate; save lives and ensure efficiencies
    • Communicate with the Logistics office to optimise delivery against targets and attain customer satisfaction
    • Monitor harvesting performance; scheduling of short-haul & loading operations to ensure grower service providers benefit from timeous interventions and achieve targets
    • Ensure that relations with communities and other internal & external stakeholders are effectively maintained & managed to uphold the company image through proactive risk identification and mitigation, and enhanced relations through regularly planned engagements.
    • Manage relationships with DAFF, DRDLR; DWAS; IDC; Traditional Councils and local municipalities by supporting interventions of common interests and extending invitations to stakeholder outreach programmes including grower days
    • Ensure that a professional relationship with suppliers’ service providers is maintained by ensuring that quality, delivery and compliance standards as set out in the job instruction system and service level agreement are adhered to, concerns logged and actioned promptly, and incidents closed off formally to maintain company image.
    • Facilitate rates negotiations between suppliers and service providers by ensuring that there is fair engagement and both parties are capacitated and helped to develop an appreciation of business principles
    • Develop a supplier development programme with set delivery targets and timelines by working closely with the uLwazi team and the ESD programme to ensure sustainable wood fibre supply and prosperity for the suppliers
    • Ensure technical knowledge transfer to the suppliers by encouraging maximised supplier involvement in their business operations through regular infield engagements and planning discussions “cover APO and budgets” at the end of seasons as well as grower field days
    • Expand growing tons by identifying new areas with tree growth potential and recruit growers into the unit; determine suitable supplier contracts to increase sustainable wood fibre supply to own markets
    • Ensure compliance to legislative and company policies & procedures by holding others to account and training where necessary to ensure fair trade and prosperity
    • Analyse TCS reports and ensure that timber supply is aligned to contractual volumes and all suppliers have updated contracts in place.
    • Audit TCS adherence, eCams and Forcelink by drawing system reports and analysing in order to ensure legal compliance
    • Improve supplier loyalty by keeping them abreast of their deliveries, share monthly reports or statements; respond timeously to concerns and share the latest industry developments to enhance growth and empowerment
    • Ensure that company assets such as buildings; vehicles are maintained & managed effectively according to set standards (hygiene & legal compliance) and regulations and within budget constraints to curb penalties and loss
    • Ensure compliance to all legislation regulating the work environment including SHEQ policies, Sappi procedures, best-operating practices and work instructions by suppliers through Stop and Think Before You Act (STBA)
    • Educate suppliers on markets’ requirements and monitor adherence to standards, policies and procedures to ensure mutual benefit

    • Ensure projects remain financially viable; suppliers enjoy maximum skills benefits and deliver according to business plans through regular engagements with the suppliers to enable effective skills transfer and economic growth 
    • Facilitate water licence applications through direct engagements with DWAS; DEFF and EDTEA, get all necessary documentation available to ensure speedy resolutions to achieve annual planting targets
    • Ensure that the following month’s sales plan is compiled, confirmed and submitted to the Forestry Manager (FM) to ensure timeous communication with the Logistics manager
    • Ensure weekly infield and depot stocks are communicated to the harvesting FM to ensure alignment of timber supply to market demand
    • Prepare monthly progress reports to monitor all technical, financial and administrative resources made available to your unit to ensure seamless reporting requirements for senior management and suppliers are met.
    • Report monthly on the district’s performance, ensure monthly performance is captured correctly in the reports and costs analysed to enhance costs efficiencies in the organisation

    What are we looking for?

    • National Diploma in Forestry or related qualification
    • A Logistics and/or Transport Management qualification will be advantageous.
    • At least 8 years of experience in timber procurement and/or forestry management.

    Dry End Controller

    Description

To ensure maximum availability and quality paper production by being pro-active in identifying and rectifying negative impacts on the Dryer section

    As an Dry End Controller you will be responsible for:

    • Perform pre-start inspections of the dryer steam system, steam traps, separators, screens, and ropes.
    • Perform shutdown tasks including steam isolations/de-isolations and cleaning of the dryer section and tail feed system.
    • Set and maintain correct dryer screen and rope tensions, ensuring proper guiding, condition, and cleanliness.
    • Coordinate teamwork during dryer screen and rope changes and assist with felt and wire changes.
    • Monitor, check, and correct PV fans and air make-up units on mezzanine floors
    • Feed the paper tail during start-up and control dry end draws through to the Pope reel.
    • Remove paper jams during breaks and operate dry-end size press repulpers
    • Produce paper according to MPS requirements and coordinate changes in basis weight, trim, and speed.

    Assistant Engineering Planner 1

    • We’re looking for an experienced Assistant Engineering Planner to administer maintenance planning tasks and plant maintenance data on SAP in order to contribute to the overall equipment effectiveness within a specific plant or area in the mill. 

    As an Assistant Engineering Planner, you will be responsible for:

    • Create plant maintenance notifications on SAP and update changes as per the notification request form
    • Review all notifications created to ensure all relevant information is captured correctly
    • Create work orders from notifications and release them on a weekly basis as per business process for inclusion in the following weeks maintenance plan, adding relevant revision code for the week
    • Compile a weekly schedule of all planned work and provide it to superintendents for further action
    • Print and issue work orders per artisan and foreman on a weekly basis
    • Receive updates from artisans on the progress of work completed and update notification status including hours spent on planned maintenance
    • Highlight any action required after the work order has been completed to the planner for further escalation
    • Create purchase requisitions for required items and service accept on receipt of items
    • Attend shut meetings and take minutes ensuring all items related to the shut are captured i.e. critical paths, rundown start-up, etc, and identify action items arising from the meeting
    • Release, print, and issue work orders and work packs to all relevant disciplines two days before the shut
    • Print a tracking bar chart for contractors and Sappi resources and assist the planner in updating during the shut
    • Draw regular reports on cost, backlog management, plant objectives and targets, and other plant requirements
    • Compile and distribute weekly capacity planning reports per maintenance superintendent to highlight and address under utilised / overloaded resources with the relevant superintendent
    • Compile, distribute, and analyse a weekly plan compliance report and develop action plans together with the planner and maintenance superintendents
    • Adhere to set record-keeping and document control procedures to comply with legal requirements
    • Assist with the management of plant and infrastructure maintenance costs
    • Analyse maintenance costs to evaluate expenditure and assist area engineers in identifying problem areas
    • Assess committed costs and determine if work orders with PAPO(Paperwork outstanding) status can be completed
    • Maintain high levels of housekeeping within in area of work

    What are we looking for?

    • NQF level 4 qualification (Matric / N3)
    • 1-2 years of relevant experience within an engineering environment
    • Computer literacy (MS Office)
    • A recognized trade test certificate will be considered advantageous 
    • SAP PM knowledge and proficiency together with  Awareness of the OHS Act and lockout procedures will be considered advantageous

    Instrument Mechanician

    • Sappi Ngodwana seeks an experienced Instrument Mechanician to perform maintenance tasks safely, ensuring plant reliability and maximizing equipment effectiveness while maintaining instrumentation systems in compliance with safety standards.

    As an Instrumentation Mechanician, your role includes:

    • Installing, commissioning, modifying, and maintaining instrument installations and DCS equipment to meet Engineering and Production standards.
    • Optimizes Process Controls: Optimizes process control systems (DCS) through loop tuning and fault-finding to ensure performance requirements are met.
    • Repairs and Replaces Instruments: Removes, cleans, repairs, and replaces defective instruments using appropriate hand tools.
    • Assembles and Calibrates: Reassembles instruments and calibrates readings to ensure accurate function according to standards.
    • Maintains Records: Records calibrations, parts used, and maintains inventory of spare parts.
    • Creates Documentation: Prepares schematic drawings, sketches, and reports to document changes made to instruments, circuits, and systems.
    • Supports Team Efforts: Performs assigned duties to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
    • Promotes Safety and Compliance: Understands and adheres to Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) requirements, investigates incidents, identifies root causes of non-conformances, and maintains workplace cleanliness.

    Required Minimum Qualifications:

    • Recognized Instrumentation Trade Certificate accredited by Manpower or SETA.
    • Preferably, a minimum of 2 years of post-apprenticeship experience, with a strong emphasis on instrumentation fault finding within an industrial setting.
