    Field Production Co-Ordinator

    Description

    • The Field Production Co-ordinator is responsible for the logistical planning, execution, and support of all television news field operations. The incumbent is also expected to assist in similar activities to support the organisation’s growth in digital and other platforms.
    • The role ensures that crews and talent are properly resourced, field broadcasts run smoothly, and of high quality, accurate, and timely coverage is delivered, while maintaining compliance, safety, and effective stakeholder coordination.

    Planning & Logistics

    • Coordinate field production schedules for anchors, reporters, producers, camera crews and other assigned production resources.
    • Coordinate transport, accommodation, permits, access arrangements and other logistical requirements to support successful field assignments.
    • Ensure required production and technical equipment is available, operational and delivered to field teams within agreed production timelines.
    • Liaise with editorial and production teams to align field coverage priorities with available resources and operational requirements.
    • Coordinate catering requirements for major outside broadcasts and extended field productions in accordance with operational requirements.
    • Liaise with event organisers and relevant stakeholders to secure venues, access, dates, times and permissions required for field productions.
    • Conduct site inspections and prepare clear broadcast plans that communicate venue requirements, production logistics, access arrangements and operational responsibilities to relevant teams.

    Field Operations Support

    • Act as the primary operational link between the newsroom, field crews, technical teams and relevant external stakeholders during field assignments.
    • Field Operations Support Monitor field deployments and production activities to ensure operational requirements, safety protocols and agreed production plans are followed.
    • Facilitate effective communication between field teams and studio-based production teams throughout assignments and live broadcasts.
    • Respond promptly to logistical, operational and production challenges arising in the field and coordinate appropriate solutions.
    • Monitor the progress of field assignments and provide timely updates to relevant editorial, production and technical stakeholders.
    • Coordinate changes to field requirements arising from breaking news, changing production priorities or unforeseen operational circumstances.
    • Support the efficient and safe execution of field productions while maintaining professional conduct and operational discipline.

    Administration & Compliance

    • Maintain accurate records of field assignments, crew deployments, equipment usage, travel arrangements, permits, incidents and other production documentation.
    • Monitor field production expenditure, costs and resource allocation in accordance with approved operational and financial parameters.
    • Ensure required permits, contracts, access arrangements and other documentation are obtained and maintained before field production activities commence.
    • Ensure field production activities comply with organisational policies, broadcasting requirements, applicable legislation and relevant regulatory obligations.
    • Maintain accurate production documentation to support financial accountability, operational reporting and post-production review.
    • Identify and escalate operational, contractual, financial or compliance risks that may affect field production delivery.
    • Ensure confidential, sensitive and operational information is handled appropriately throughout the production process.

    Broadcast Liaison

    • Maintain effective coordination with Broadcast Management, technical teams, logistics, editorial teams and other stakeholders to support successful field production delivery.
    • Brief reporters, camera crews, producers, anchors, guests and other relevant stakeholders on production plans, schedules, access arrangements and operational requirements.
    • Maintain professional relationships with event organisers, venues, service providers and external stakeholders to facilitate efficient field operations.
    • Communicate permissions, access requirements, production limitations and operational arrangements clearly and timeously to relevant stakeholders.
    • Provide field teams with appropriate operational support before, during and after assignments to maximise production efficiency.
    • Conduct appropriate pre-deployment briefings and post-assignment debriefs to address operational requirements, lessons learned and outstanding matters. Promote constructive working relationships that support collaboration, accountability and a stable working environment.

    Health, Safety & Risk Management

    • Conduct appropriate risk assessments for field assignments and implement measures to mitigate identified operational and safety risks.
    • Ensure field crews are appropriately briefed on health, safety, security and emergency procedures relevant to their assignments.
    • Coordinate appropriate security, medical support, insurance arrangements and emergency contacts for assignments where required.
    • Monitor field operations to ensure compliance with organisational health and safety requirements and applicable legislation and regulations.
    • Identify, report and escalate hazards, incidents and emerging risks promptly to the appropriate stakeholders.
    • Ensure changes in field conditions or risk levels are communicated promptly and operational plans are adjusted where necessary. 
    • Maintain appropriate records of risk assessments, incidents and corrective actions arising from field production activities.

    Technical & Production Support

    • Provide operational support and guidance on the use of SNG vehicles, LiveU, eLink, mobile journalism equipment and other approved broadcast technologies where required.
    • Coordinate technical requirements for live links, outside broadcasts and field productions in collaboration with relevant technical teams.
    • Ensure field production teams have access to the required technical resources and operational information before deployment.
    • Support the setup and operational readiness of field transmission and production equipment in accordance with production requirements.
    • Identify and assist with resolving on-site technical and production issues within the scope of the role and escalate matters requiring specialist intervention.
    • Maintain awareness of developments in field production and broadcast technologies that may improve operational efficiency and production capability.
    • Ensure technical equipment and production resources are handled, transported and used in accordance with prescribed operational, safety and security procedures.

    • Develop and maintain professional relationships with credible experts, analysts, commentators, media partners and relevant external stakeholders.
      Represent the organisation professionally at appropriate industry events public engagements and media forums.
    • Maintain constructive relationships with external stakeholders while protecting editorial independence and integrity.
    • Collaborate with commercial teams to identify appropriate content opportunities while maintaining the required separation between editorial and commercial interests.
    • Ensure stakeholder engagements and editorial activities comply with applicable broadcasting, media, privacy, ethical and other relevant legislation and regulations.

    • Maintain and implement an Individual Development Plan aligned with the requirements of the Digital News Editor role and identified development needs.
    • Participate in relevant learning and development initiatives that strengthen digital journalism, editorial leadership, analytics and platform capabilities.
    • Maintain current knowledge of digital journalism trends, emerging technologies, audience behaviour and evolving publishing practices.
    • Apply new digital tools, technologies and industry practices to improve editorial quality, workflow efficiency and audience engagement.
    • Participate actively in peer learning, mentoring and knowledge-sharing initiatives across the digital and wider newsroom.
    • Support the development of digital knowledge and capability among colleagues and relevant internal stakeholders.

    Minimum Requirements 

    Qualifications

    • National Senior Certificate - NQF Level 4 - Essential 
    • National Diploma - Journalism - NQF Level 6 - Essential 

    Experience

    • Journalism, Media, or Digital Newsroom and/or related field - Operational - 7 years - Essential 
    • Journalism, Media, or Digital Newsroom and/or related field - Supervisory - 3 years - Recommended 

    Competencies

    • Drivers Licences - Code B;Motor vehicle licence - Recommended

    Technology Proficiency

    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop Illustrator, Google Analytics, Crown Tangle, Knowledge of audio editing and production, CMS - Advanced
    • Dalet and/or any other NRCS - Advanced

    Skills and Knowledge

    • Thorough understanding of press code, media law and other related legislation - Advanced
