    Internship : Geosciences

    About the job: 

    • The CSIR has a vacancy for Internship in the Mandela Mining Precinct. The Mandela Mining Precinct aims to appoint an intern in the Geosciences area for the next 18 months. The position is based in Johannesburg.This position reports to the Programme Manager.

    Key responsibilities:

    •  Literature review of previous research done locally and internationally within the field of geosciences and its applications aligned to the programme.
    • Assist and support with underground trials at various mine sites.
    • Engage with researchers and stakeholders involved within the programme projects. 
    • Conduct research work/tasks related to technologies, as assigned by project leads/programme manager.
    • Report on processes and results.
    • Attend and present on results where required.
    • Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leaders.

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    • A minimum of a BSc Honors degree in Geology/Geophysics; 
    • Mineral Resource Management qualification will be an advantage;
    • Experience within the mining environment will be an added advantage;
    • Proficient in Microsoft suite of programmes;
    • Good numerical skills;
    • Good attention to detail.     
    • A valid Drivers License will be an advantage.
    • Must have clear/no criminal record;
    • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

    Software Engineer: Digital Signal Processing

    About the job: 

    • The CSIR has a vacancy for a Software Engineer in the Radar and Electronic Warfare Impact Area within the Defence and Security Cluster.
    • The incumbent will be responsible to design and develop software applications, tools, modules, libraries and sub-systems for use in the Integrated Radar Software Solutions Research Group.
    • This role will play a vital part in high-impact projects from advanced land and naval surveillance radar sensors to SAR sensing systems in UAV, and spaceborne platforms.
    • This position is based in Pretoria and will report to the Research Group Leader.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Develop cutting edge real-time software;
    • Push the boundaries of current technology in processing throughput;
    • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to design, develop, and implement breakthrough radar technologies in South Africa, set for successful deployment within the global defence market;
    • Develop high-performance systems that challenge the limits of radar and system design;
    • Engineer groundbreaking solutions at the heart of next-generation radar systems.

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    • A Bachelor of Engineering degree in electronic or computer engineering with at least three years' experience in software engineering; OR
    • A Master's degree in electronic or computer engineering with at least one-year experience;

    Experience in the following is required:

    • Digital Signal Processing;
    • C++ (preferably, otherwise C or C#), and Python;
    • Data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and code optimization;
    • GIT Version Control and CI/CD tools;
    • Linux development environments;
    • Understanding of how networks work.

    Experience in the following will be advantageous;

    • Modern C++ standards and libraries;
    • Object-oriented programming;
    • GPGPU programming (CUDA);

    • Use of JTAG debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analysers to troubleshoot hardware-software interactions
    • Understanding of how networks work.
    • Understanding of communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, PCIe, ETC.)
    • Modern C++ standards and libraries;
    • Object-oriented programming;

    Application Support Developer

    About the job: 

    • The CSIR has a vacancy for an Application Support Developer in the ICT Services Portfolio, who will develop and test applications. The incumbent will support, modify and/or update existing applications by using development skills, following development practices as prescribed by the best practices and the ICT Services development methodologies, standards, procedures and guidelines. The position is based in Pretoria.
    • This position reports to Lead: ERP Application Maintenance and Development

    Key responsibilities:

    • Software Development: Designs, codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends and refactors moderately complex programs/scripts. Applies agreed standards and tools to achieve a well-engineered result. Collaborates in reviews of work with others as appropriate.
    • Testing: Defines test conditions for given requirements. Designs test cases and create test scripts and supporting data, working to the specifications provided. Interprets, executes and records test cases in accordance with project test plans. Analyses and reports test activities and results. Identifies and reports issues and risks.
    • Systems Integration and Build: Produces software builds from software source code. Conduct tests as defined in an integration test specification record the details of any failures. Analyses and reports on integration test activities and results. Identifies and reports issues and risks.
    • Systems Installation/Decommissioning: Installs or removes hardware and/or software, and associated connections, using supplied installation instructions and tools. Conduct tests and corrects malfunctions. Documents results in accordance with agreed procedures. Assists with the evaluation of change requests. Contributes, as required, to investigations of problems and faults concerning the installation of hardware and/or software and confirms the correct working of installations.
    • Service Level Management: Monitors service delivery performance metrics and liaises with managers and customers to ensure that service level agreements are not breached.
    • Change Management: Develops, documents, and implements changes based on requests for change. Applies change control procedures.
    • Incident Management: Following agreed procedures, identifies, registers, and categorises incidents. Gathers information to enable incident resolution and promptly allocates incidents as appropriate. Maintains records and advises relevant persons of actions taken

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    • A National Diploma (NQF Level 6) or Bachelors Degree (NQF Level 7) in Computer science/engineering, Information technology with three years of relevant experience and a proven track record in using PHP, Java, MySQL, MS SQL, or PL/SQL
    • Working knowledge in a wide variety of programming languages, for example, in PHP / SQL / Java / Python / C++ / C# / JavaScript / HTML / HTML5 / XML, etc. 
    • Knowledge of various application development methodologies and frameworks
    • Ability to set-up and administer a Linux server
    • Working knowledge of testing methodologies, tools, concepts, and standards
    • Understanding of common application failures and faults
    • Understanding of automated test tools
    • Knowledge of quality standards and procedures
    • Understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle
    • Good time-management skills
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
    • Ability to communicate technical issues to non-technical individuals
