Purpose of the position

The purpose of the position is to provide advice and strategic input to business to ensure compliance to legislation and management of Global Customs & Excise.

Key Performance Areas would include, but are not limited to

• Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures relating to Customs & Excise is aligned with current legislation and develop procedures as and when required.
• Manage and monitor all Tariff Classifications to ensure alignment with all applicable legislation.
• To provide a range of innovative solutions to manage Customs & Excise duties ensuring industry competitiveness.
• Assist, advise and implement new and existing Customs, Excise and International Trade technical initiatives whilst considering and consulting on potential risks including the impact of legal, economic and other tax issues in all territories.
• Advise business in all territories on technical matters by conducting technical research and draft technically correct opinions and reports.
• Assess Customs & Excise implications of new or revised trade routes.
• Attend to Customs & Excise related queries from Revenue Authorities and prepare responses to queries raised.
• Review Accountant: Customs & Excise technical opinions, accounts and/or reports.
• Proactively identify interconnected inefficiencies, determine its impact and use to develop best fit alternatives; implementing best practice solutions.
• Recommend and implement changes to optimise processes, systems, policies and procedures.
• Resolve complex procedural obstacles in customs & excise operations.
• Implement governance, risk and compliance policy in own practice area to identify and manage governance and risk exposure liability in all territories.
• Monitor, analyse and communicate legislative changes to local management in all territories.
• Review, analyse and interpret existing legislation and proposed legislation for purposes of preparing forecasts of the Group’s tax liability.
• Maintaining a Customs and Excise risk register for all territories.
• Participation in tax related projects, e.g. update and implementation of internal tax processes and guidelines, analysis of upcoming tax changes, development of guidance on these changes including internal training of the respective employees and implementation in the company.
• Supporting Group Tax Manager regarding tax risk management, tax audits, review and structuring of transactions.

The successful candidate must have the following qualification, experience and skills:

• Commercial degree with Accounting. Completed articles and appropriate post graduate qualification or equivalent.
• 6-8 years Excise management experience.
• Minimum of 5 years managerial experience at middle management level.
• Strong technical knowledge in Customs and Excise area.
• Proven analytical, Accounting and Audit skills.
• Project management skills and experience.
• Demonstrated hands-on approach and success working in a team based environment.
