    Audit Manager

    Job description

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Qualified CA(SA) essential
    • 1 – 3 years Audit Manager experience in a Big 4 / Mid-tier firm environment
    • Experience on Listed clients and financial services essential
    • Strong technical ability

    Planning (General):
    To make recommendations on the annual budgets and rates – planning / portfolios etc

    Planning (Audit):

    • To set up a meeting with the Director, the AIC, and the client if necessary, to discuss the audit and any relevant and significant events that have taken place during the year. To ensure that that the AIC is introduced to the client if new to the job.
    • Negotiate fees with the client on behalf of the Director when and if this has not already been done
    • Ensure the AIC has a completed and signed authority to Commence Audit
    • To ensure that the AIC has considered the terms of engagement and takes appropriate action on the drafting of the engagement letter for signature by the engagement Director
    • Determine the time necessary to complete the audit work and agree timetables with the client.
    • To ensure that the AIC is liaising with the client and preparing a Schedule of Work to be completed by the client.
    • Assign staff to the audit engagement, determining the number of staff and the level of experience required.
    • Prepare detailed time budgets, allocating the audit work to specific audit team members. (This is done in conjunction with the Director and the AIC)

    Ensure that the audit plan is complete and present it for approval to the engagement Director, including related assessment of:

    • Inherent risk
    • Planning materiality
    • Control environment assessment
    • Audit strategy
    • Ensure that the audit plan is signed off before commencement of the audit
    • Brief the audit team and, in greater detail the AIC, if this has not been done previously

    During field work:

    • Supervise and instruct the audit staff to ensure that performance and documentation comply with the firm’s policies and procedures. This responsibility includes providing adequate on-the-job training, counselling and evaluation.
    • Positively react to over-runs / time spent on the audit and on sections of the audit to identify any problem areas in a timely manner.
    • Be responsible for staff movements – to plan staff on the planning board
    • Be responsible for ensuring that a detailed review is performed. To the extent that some of this can be done by a competent AIC, the manager may delegate the function. However, the manager remains responsible for the entire audit file – including ensuring all outstanding work is completed
    • Ensure that all matters or issues that might impact on the audit opinion are brought on a timely basis to the attention of the engagement Director.
    • Document all decisions taken during the audit and ensure that the Director is informed of these
    • Provide regular feedback, through structured meetings, to the Partners on the status of all their jobs

    On completion of the audit:

    • Be responsible for ensuring that fieldwork is completed by the deadline date
    • Review any outstanding working papers.
    • Ensure that the completed work ties in with the planned scope of the engagement
    • Ensure that matters for Director’s attention and Overs / Unders schedules have been prepared and discussed with the Director and the Director has signed off the schedule
    • Ensure that all matters on the MPA’s and Outstanding lists are completed
    • Review the draft financial statements
    • Ensure that the post balance sheet events review work and the going concern review is completed up to the date of the signing of the audit report.
    • Ensure that an appropriate audit report is drafted
    • Ensure that a draft management letter is drafted and that it is factually correct
    • Review the work-in-progress
    • Prepare / review staff evaluations and ensure that these are discussed with the staff concerned
    • Prepare notes on how and where to reduce audit times in the next year and where to improve the audit in the next year.
    • Accompany the Director to the client to discuss the audit, present the management letter and the financial statements

    Billing:

    • Ensure that client’s billing is accurate and processed timeously
    • Assist the Partner / Director with all his / her billing and drive the billing process

    Debtors:

    • Assist the Partner with the collection of his / her debtors
    • Attend the debtors meeting together with the Partner

    Tax Returns:

    • Assist the Partner with ensuring that his / her outstanding tax return list is followed-up and attended to on a monthly basis
    • Attend meetings with the Partner and the relevant Tax Compliance Administrator on a monthly or bi-monthly basis as required, and ensuring all outstanding tax returns have a plan to be completed

    Client Relationship Management:

    • To assist the Partner with the general management of his / her client base
    • To visit existing and new clients together with the Partner and the bid team in order to determine additional business needs, to pitch for new audit work and to refer business lines to meet any other needs (cross-selling) and thereby assisting in growing the client base
    • To draft client proposals or assist other business lines in the drafting of these based on client needs
    • To consult with clients in areas of expertise

    Staff:

    • To mentor any junior audit managers/supervisors
    • To offer assistance to any other audit manager if assistance is required to finish or complete jobs i.e. help to manage workloads
    • To assist in the recruitment and selection of Trainee Accountants (Graduate Recruitment drives)
    • To conduct performance reviews and assist in driving a high performance culture throughout the organisation
    • To monitor and maintain or improve the motivation levels and culture / climate within the audit team
    • To coach and counsel employees where necessary
    • To ensure that staff in the audit department receive applicable on-the-job training and development
    • To assist in identifying training needs and in scheduling training programmes, facilitating this training (where applicable) and monitoring the quality and output of such programmes
    • To mentor Trainee Accountants (formally and informally)
    • To advise on bonuses (if applicable) and any other ad hoc salary increases
    • To participate in and to encourage the audit team to participate in company events and functions
    • To manage all audit staff disciplinary measures including investigating incidents and representing management in disciplinary or grievance procedures as applicable
    • To manage and react to AICs request for appropriate resourcing per job ito of control of staff movements and utilization of resources.
    • To approve and co-ordinate staff leave

    Ad hoc:
    Presentations: To facilitate presentations as required including:

    • Annual Accountants Update
    • Client awareness / education sessions
    • Training / technical sessions where necessary

    Meetings: to attend relevant meetings, take action and follow-up where applicable. Meetings include:

    • Weekly Director / Managers
    • Weekly planning meetings
    • Manager’s meetings
    • Grant Thornton Staff meetings

     

    Peer review:

    • To assist in supplying information required
    • for peer reviews

    Marketing:

    Attend client functions

    Self-development:

    To continually develop oneself (Continuous Professional Education and self-development)
