Job Summary

The DG Murray Trust is incubating a “Zero Dropout Schools” initiative in 2018, with the vision of halving the number of learners who are pushed out of the basic education system before grade 12 each year. This ambitious vision aims to set a common agenda and provides direction and clarity to mobilise and direct the activities of a diverse range of stakeholders towards the same critical outcomes.

In order to meet the ambitious target, one of the key strategies towards driving the development of a national network of ‘Zero Dropout Schools’, is to develop and demonstrate remediation/catch-up of reading for meaning as a core competency that underpins school (and life) success.

To this end, the Zero Dropout School initiative is recruiting an Accelerate Reading Specialist to design and develop a reading accelerator programme, with strong diagnostics, for older learners who are behind their reading age. The Accelerate Reading Specialist will be part of a small, dynamic team focused on driving strategies to prevent learners from leaving school before completing grade 12.

Core skills and background:

• A postgraduate university degree (preferably a Master’s degree in education)
• Experience in literacy remediation for grades 5 and up
• Experience in literacy remediation, including designing diagnostics and developing literacy curricula
• Preferably experience with rolling out training programmes
• Creative, driven, enthusiastic and committed to developing cutting edge quality work.
