    Lead Specialist: Tax Law Litigation

    Job description

    Role Description:

    • To lead, direct and implement the Sasol strategy for current and potential South African Tax Law litigation and related legal services to Sasol Operating Model Entities (OMEs)
    • To manage Sasol Group risk associated with South African Tax Law disputes and litigation
    • To provide legal services to Business Units forming part of the Sasol Group in relation to South African Tax Law disputes and litigation while ensuring that the related business goals are achieved in a legally compliant manner.
    • Lead and influence the formulation of appropriate Tax Law policies and standards in collaboration with the Sasol Group Tax Function through regular works discussions and engagements both with Legal Function line management as well as the management of the Sasol Group Tax Function.
    • Ensuring the effective execution of the mandate of the legal function in relation to South African Tax law disputes and litigation.
    • Engage with stakeholders within the Group Tax Function and Sasol Business Units to ensure that legal solutions are aligned to the business needs.
    • Strategically manage customer relationships with respective Sasol Business Units and Functions with specific reference to Tax Law integration in consultation with the Sasol Group Tax Function.
    • Obtain performance feedback from clients and stakeholders.
    • Oversee the allocation of legal resources relating to South African Tax Law matters and to ensure the efficient use of legal resources.
    • To provide legal advice in relation to Sasol business activities and projects insofar as it relates to or may potentially impact on South African Tax Law
    • Facilitate legal aspects of Tax Law training programmes developed and implemented by the Sasol Group Tax Function.
    • To influence long-term decisions and policies impacted by Tax Law Litigation and compliance standards and practices in consultation with the Sasol Group Tax Function.
    • To provide pragmatic, innovative, cost effective and trusted legal opinions relating to Tax Law litigation when required.
    • Manage Tax Law litigation matters as appropriate and advise on tactical approaches to be followed in tax related disputes in consultation with the Sasol Group Tax Function.
    • Identify and advise on management of Legal Risk exposure resulting from Tax Law exposure and potential Tax Law litigation.
    • Provide input to Business Unit board and other governance submissions and reports relating to Tax Law litigation.
    • Participate in SOX, annual certification and other compliance processes as needed.
    • Submit periodic legal reports to Group Legal management.
    • Update and vett material reports (Annual Report, Form 20F, Group Sustainable Development Report etc).
    • Maintain an awareness of any changes in legislative landscape to stay abreast of the latest legal developments.
    • Report on Tax Law Litigation progress (including costs) to Group Legal management and Sasol management as appropriate.
    • Manage external legal counsel expenditure within planned and budgeted parameters.
    • Pro-actively participate in the influencing and commenting on Tax Law related legislative changes in consultation with Sasol Group Tax Function.
    • Keep the Legal Executive Management apprised of all significant legal matters which may impact on Sasol’s reputation.
    • Understand, support and execute the values, vision, and strategy of the Sasol Group of companies.

    Qualification

    Level of Experience: 15 years (minimum of 10 years of Tax and Tax litigation specialisation)

    Minimum Qualifications and Experience required

    • Admitted Attorney / Advocate
    • General Council of the Bar (GCB) membership
    • Minimum LLB or equivalent law degree from an accredited law school
    • Post graduate Tax Law qualification
