    (311) Associate Macroprudential Specialist - Finstab

    Brief description

    • The main purpose of this position is to conduct macroprudential research and collect, compile and verify statistical data to enhance the assessment of vulnerabilities in both the domestic and global macroeconomic environments and financial markets to support recommendations for macroprudential policy actions.

    Detailed description

    The successful candidate will be responsible for, among other tasks, the following key performance areas:

    • Identify, analyse and monitor financial stability indicators used for the assessment of financial stability vulnerabilities based on international best practice. 
    • Maintain a comprehensive, updated and accurate database used for analyses that get presented to the Financial Stability Committee and/or published in the Financial Stability Review.
    • Analyse and reconcile new data with historical trends and other relevant data and information sources.
    • Conduct research in financial stability-related issues to understand the transmission channels through which vulnerabilities in other sectors of the economy can impact the stability of the South African financial system.
    • Assist with developing econometric models that quantitatively assess the financial stability implications of developments in the macroeconomic environment.
    • Stay abreast of new thinking and the latest developments in the global financial stability arena. 
    • Prepare briefing notes, compile comprehensive research findings and presentations on research findings and present them to both internal and external stakeholders. 
    • Accompany more senior colleagues to engagements with both internal and external stakeholders.
    • Support and encourage skills development of junior specialists. 
    • Perform ad hoc duties which include participation in research projects, the completion of surveys and/or questionnaires from regional and international organisations.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To be considered for this position, candidates must: 

    • have a minimum of an Honours degree in Economics, Banking, Finance, Econometrics or a related field or an equivalent qualification;
    • have a minimum of two to five years’ job-related experience with a strong background in macroeconomics and/or financial markets;
    • be proficient in the use of quantitative methods of analysis; and   
    • have knowledge of macroprudential theory and policies.

    Additional requirements include: 

    • knowledge of the South African financial system and the regulatory environment; 
    • economic and/or financial market research knowledge and skills;
    • proven facilitation and presentation skills;
    • experience in project management and risk management;
    • excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; and
    • proficiency in the use of Microsoft (MS) Office products such as MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
