    Graduate Engineer

    Job Description
    Job Purpose

    • The Canal & River Trust is a charity entrusted to care for 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales. We are responsible for an enormous network of bridges, locks, embankments, towpaths, aqueducts, docks and reservoirs.
    • We are looking for Civil Engineers to join our Asset Engineering team. This is an important role across the Trust which requires someone with experience and vision to see improvements that can be made and to apply your influencing skills to ensure priority work is identified and planned to reduce our long term risks.
    • The successful candidate will play an important role in the management of The Canal & River Trusts’ engineering assets which include historic aqueducts, bridges, locks, culverts, weirs and sluices to name but a few.
    • Using asset inspection data, you will prioritise and implement further inspections, monitoring and repairs which will maintain the integrity and safety of the canal network. You will contribute towards the production of a national programme of works and contribute towards preparing details and specifications for maintenance and repair works and will provide briefing documents for larger scale works. Using your engineering skills, you will provide technical advice and assistance to colleagues, especially when responding to reactive issues.
    • You will deliver innovative solutions and advice which conserve and enhance the heritage and environment of the waterway network for visitors to enjoy, supporting Canal & River Trust’s aims to improve safety and increase the number of people using the inland waterways network.
    • By working efficiently as part of the Asset Management Team, you will help to define standards and procedures and make a key contribution to the repair, maintenance, conservation and protection of the condition of the nation’s waterways.
    • Your working day will be varied and exciting, working together with colleagues across the Trust to deliver a strong Asset Management Plan.

    Responsibilities

    • Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience :
    • Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards. Undertake risk assessments, report incidents, accidents and near misses.
    • Using SAP and GIS systems, ensure all relevant information and analysis is input in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Interpret information and data to assess the condition of structures and make recommendations for further actions.
    • Provide engineering and operational support to teams, to assist in the resolution of engineering-related situations as they arise.
    • Assist with the preparation of contract documents and oversee minor construction works as appropriate under supervision of Senior Engineer.
    • Contribute technical advice covering feasibility, detailed design and build-ability of projects taking account of Canal & River Trust standards and external standards including heritage and environmental issues.
    • Provide a point of contact for technical queries internally and externally. Respond as appropriate by providing advice and reference to relevant information sources.
    • Provide engineering support to the local Waterway and volunteer groups.
    • Where appropriate, active participation in stand-by and call out rotas.
    • Collect and maintain excellent records of Canal & River Trust’s assets.

    Qualifications/Skills/Experience

    • CDegree or equivalent in Civil Engineering discipline or progressing towards Chartered Engineer status
    • Membership of professional institution at at least Graduate Membership, eg ICE, CIWEM
    • Experience of applying engineering concepts to risk based Asset Management
    • Good standard of written and verbal communication including some experience in making formal presentations in engineering subjects.
    • Proficient in the use of a personal computer and business applications software eg MS Office.
    • Experience of using GIS or mapping systems, SAP and AutoCAD are desirable
    • Valid driving licence

    Location

    • This vacancy is based from our canal side office near Devizes in Wiltshire, South Region, the specific responsibility for the Kennet and Avon, Bridgewater and Taunton and South Oxford Canals.
