Job description

The Project Execution Manager’s role is to provide the Project Management capacity to the Project function in order to ensure efficient execution of underground mining and engineering operations and executions. The role’s primarily focus is on underground mine execution, operational planning and engineering execution. The scope of the role includes leading, management and administration of the department. The incumbent will be responsible for the comprehensive long, medium and short-term execution of the mining and engineering projects. The role holder will also be responsible for the integration and direction of projects and services functions to be performed in accordance to the overall rebase plan. The incumbent is further responsible for ensuring effective cross-functional coordination between geotechnical, geology, mine planning, survey, engineering, backfill, contractors, mine support functions, construction and production and to ensure efficient and effective technical services are provided. A project management style coordination system is to be implemented for effective execution.

The appointee should:

• Be in possession of a Degree or National Diploma in Mining Engineering
• Be in possession of a Mine Managers Certificate of Competency for Metalliferous Mines
• Have at least 10 years’ appropriate managerial experience in mining, specifically in mechanized mining, of which 3 years is as a Unit Manager
• Have advanced knowledge of machine utilisation and mechanised mechanics
• Have knowledge of relevant legislation in respect of the Mine Health and Safety Act
• Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk based medical examination at the relevant Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test

Tasks and Key Responsibilities:

• Develop the strategic rebase plan for projects department up to a period of 6 years, in collaboration with head of projects, to determine, but not limited to, the following:
• Resource requirements (people and machinery)
• Capital projects deliverables
• Cost saving initiatives
• Risk mitigation plans
• Produce daily, monthly and quarterly reports on safety, progress and costs for submission to the head of projects
• Keep abreast with changes to relevant guidelines and other legislation, to make recommendations where policies and procedures need to be amended
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement new technologies and processes, enabling integration to other areas
• Achieve actual results which do not deviate from projections, in terms of cost, completion dates and quality of estimates
• Provide guidance and approve Unit Managers’ decisions in the execution of projects
• Manage the implementation of projects by reviewing project schedules, milestones and achievements, budgets and monitoring compliance
• Oversee the execution of work carried out by contractors in your area of responsibility
• Achieve SHERQ targets within the guidelines of operations strategy
• Implement controls within the department which minimise potential risk
• Appoint fully qualified/ competent employees for all positions within the department
• Implement coaching/mentoring programs for future managers; ensuring that succession practices are in place
• Maintain Employment Equity strategies for the department in line with strategic objectives
