    Operational Risk Manager

    Job description

    MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    To provide strategic leadership, direction and implementation of operational risk management to the respective functional business areas supported. Act as a trusted operational risk management business partner that equips business with the tools to mitigate financial, reputational and regulatory impact of operational risks.

    KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY / DESCRIPTION OF TASKS

    • Operational Risk strategy and framework development and deployment:
    • Develop a strategic plan for Group to deliver on the overall Operational Risk Management strategy.
    • Provide strategic direction/guidance to business to align the implementation of the Operational Risk tools in context of the business strategy and goals.
    • Drive effective execution of the operational risk strategy and framework, aligned to business specific requirements, in line with the risk appetite statements and Group policy.
    • Continuously improve the existing framework to ensure consideration of emerging risks and threats.
    • Contribute to the development of a risk and control culture in the functional area through knowledge sharing and creating awareness on the importance of risk management.
    • Share the operational risk framework and methods proactively through participation in employee orientation sessions, training of risk champions and creating awareness in executive engagement sessions.
    • Participate in the development and annual improvement of the Groups’ operational risk management strategy, framework, policies and standards.
    • Undertake research on best practices on Operational Risk tool implementation through the interaction with various Risk Management committee/bodies/structure, SARB and other stakeholders.
    • Embed Operational Risk Framework within the organisation:
    • Ensure that the Risk Management Frameworks are effective in the allocated divisions.
    • Ensure that appropriate risk assessments are done across all Business Units by facilitating the identification and assessment of all key risks, utilising appropriate tools and techniques.
    • Ensure that appropriate risk management policies and procedures are in place and updated as required.
    • Provide guidance to Business in setting the KRI’s to ensure embedding of Operational Risk tools.
    • Provide qualitative risk status reporting with accurate and reliable business information, together with analysing trends and data to relevant stakeholders.
    • Report emerging threats and risks timeously to relevant stakeholders.
    • Continuously research advanced risk management techniques and methodologies and introduce new risk initiatives, with the view of improving the sustainability of the organisation.
    • Conduct risk assessments on new products and strategic initiatives within the bank.
    • Collect and analyse operational losses in the responsible areas and perform trend and root cause analysis.
    • Conduct operational risk incident investigations.
    • Recommend value add risk management solutions to reduce the risk of re-occurrence.
    • Support management of the responsible area to ensure that strategic decisions within the business areas take full account of the current and emerging risk profile.
    • Monitor the adequacy and efficiency of the risk processes and guide the business areas’ management where appropriate.
    • Ensure that risk issues identified are monitored, reported, escalated to relevant persons and Committees and corrective actions are taken.
    • Ensure that BCPs are continually updated for the allocated business area and facilitate the testing of BCM.
    • Review regulatory reports and ensure accurate capital charge.
    • Review the Risk appetite statement and ensure that there is alignment with all the risk management functions.
    • Conduct stress testing and scenario analysis.
    • Use external data to benchmark against trends or actual control environments itself.
    • Review system reports that provide information on incidents logged on a monthly and quarterly basis.
    • Manage, lead and influence Operational Risk resources:
    • Together with the GM: Enterprise Risk and HR, determine the employee strategy for Operational Risk with a focus on talent management, resourcing, development and retention.
    • Participate in the face-to-face delivery of appropriate Operational Risk training and awareness programmes for executives, senior managers and other employees.
    • Stakeholder engagement:
    • Build and maintain credible relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including management, internal and external audit, non-executives and, regulators, as well as peers in local and international banks.
    • Establish and maintain a risk management philosophy and culture within the organisation through awareness campaigns and training initiatives.
    • Provide input into the development and implementation of a strategic and annual enterprise risk management plan.
    • Provide input into and maintain the risk maturity profile of the organisation.

    SKILLS/PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED

    • Relevant degree/diploma in Risk Management or Finance/Economics.
    • Clear understanding of the Basel II and III Capital Calculation Methods and in-depth knowledge of Basel accord.
    • Five-to-seven years’ experience in Operational Risk Management environment.
    • Strong leadership qualities including, purposeful collaboration, influencing others, leading courageously, highly proactive, ability to manage and oversee projects.
    • Strong relationship building qualities.
    • High level understanding of the Operational Risk Management tools and Framework and the ability to implement.
    • Five years Banking experience
    • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
    • Working knowledge of Risk Management Systems and Measurement Tools
    • Insight into all regulatory requirements related to the banking industry
    • Excellent presentation skills
    • Strong analytical skills
    • Ability to utilise/source all appropriate resources that will enhance the functioning of the department
    • Strong communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)

    Market-related, based on total Cost to Company
