    Dev Ops Engineer

    Job description

    What we do?

    Our primary focus in the Cape Town offices is on product development for Panasonic's aviation division. We develop and maintain the primarily toolset used by Panasonic's clients (Lufthansa, Virgin Air, Air Singapore etc.) to build, manage and deploy their inflight entertaining systems to their aircraft.

    We are also developing solutions for the logistic and shipping industry and are in the process of taking on other exciting projects from our international branches.

    Black Swan’s clients include: Pepsi, Disney, Panasonic, Mars, Tesco, Unilever, Vodafone etc.

    Objective

    Black Swan is seeking a dev ops engineer to join its expanding team in Cape Town. You are either a developer who got interested in deployment and network operations or a sysadmin who has a passion for scripting and coding and moved into the development side where you can improve the planning of test and deployment. Either way, you are a person who have pushed beyond your defined area of competence and who have a more holistic view of their technical environments.

    Job Specification

    • Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and tools
    • Ability to code and script
    • Experience with systems and IT operations
    • Comfort with frequent, incremental code testing and deployment
    • Strong grasp of automation tools
    • Comfort with collaboration, open communication and reaching across functional borders
    • Codes and documents custom test automation frameworks.
    • Reviews modules for quality assurance.
    • Builds automated deployments using configuration management technology
    • Performs ongoing routine application maintenance tasks.
    • Manage the methods of deployment (development, testing and production) and the processes and tools required to execute those deployments
    • Manage the continuous integration systems
    • Create failure management processes and tools so outages can be handled without causing a loss of delivery
    • Champion changes to tools and processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the development team
    • Manage issue tracking and agile development tools (Atlassian JIRA)
    • Automate parts of the development delivery process using scripts and other appropriate tools
    • Advise on new technologies and methodologies by becoming an expert in emerging technologies and tools

    Desired Skills and Experience

    Required Skills

    • Strong background in Linux/Unix Administration
    • Must have a good knowledge of deployment and configuration technologies (e.g. Jenkins, Puppet, Docker, Chef).
    • Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services (experience with AWS is required)
    • Strong experience with SQL and MySQL (NoSQL experience is a plus, too, since we also use Redis)
    • A working understanding of code and scripting languages (e.g. Java, Python, Ruby etc.)
    • Knowledge of best practices and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service
    • Should have experience operating in virtual environments.
    • Must have a good working knowledge of source control technologies (e.g. Git, subversion).
