    Associate Professor/Professor

    Job description

    The Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) was established in 2004 and is dedicated to basic, applied and strategic research in social development and developmental welfare. We aim to positively influence development issues in the Southern African region by contributing to debates on social policy, improvements in service delivery and the expansion of knowledge through cutting-edge research.

    Responsibilities: 

    • Conduct research in the social development field in South Africa and the continent.
    • Conceptualise, initiate and lead research projects.
    • Publish in accredited journals and peer-reviewed books.
    • Supervise postgraduate students.
    • Undertake postgraduate teaching.
    • Build research capacity by mentoring and managing staff members and postgraduate students.
    • Write proposals for grant funded research projects.
    • Manage research projects, including financial accountability.
    • Report to donors.
    • Build and maintain national and international external partners.
    • Disseminate research.

    Minimum Requirements

    At Associate Professor Level:

    • A relevant Doctoral degree.
    •  7 – 10 years in research management.
    • Experience in supervision of postgraduate students.
    • Evidence of national / international academic standing as an emerging or established researcher.
    • Substantial research output (At least six accredited publications, 3 of which should have been attained in the last 3 years).
    • Experience managing grant funds in a research context.

    At Professor Level:

    • A relevant Doctoral degree.
    • 10 - 15 years in research management.
    • Substantial experience in supervision of postgraduate students (including the completion of degrees of doctoral students).
    • Evidence of national / international academic standing as an established and leading researcher.
    • Substantial research output (At least ten accredited publications, 5 of which should have been attained in the last 3 years).
    • Experience managing grant funds in a research context.
    • Evidence of staff management

    Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

    • Ability to conceptualise, plan, manage and disseminate research.
    • Ability to produce accredited academic publications.
    • Successful supervision of postgraduate students.
    • Teaching experience at a postgraduate level.
    • Use of statistical data analysis packages, e.g. SPSS, STATA, Atlas.ti, NVivo
    • Use of mixed methodologies will be an added advantage.
    • Research and project management experience.
    • Successful proposal writing and meeting donor reporting requirements.
    • Excellent financial accountability.
    • Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.
    • Willingness to mentor more junior staff members.
    • Ability to take initiative.

    Recommendations:

    • Leadership and personnel management skills.
    • Ability to design, manage and analyse quantitative research.

    Please provide a portfolio of evidence with regard to your research as well as teaching. For the research portfolio this should include an overview of your research profile, niche area of expertise, the philosophy that underpins your research approach, your research practice and expertise, and evidence of your research output and the impact thereof. For the teaching portfolio this should include a teaching philosophy, student and peer evaluations of your teaching, assessment practice, course and material design, leadership with regard to teaching, professional development, including the scholarship of teaching and learning, and recognition of teaching expertise (such as awards, and external assessments undertaken for other universities.
