Analytics Lead – Customer & Commercial at Salt South Africa

About the Role

• A leading South African value retailer is restructuring its analytics function – moving from a flat model where analysts spread thinly across every domain, to one with clear ownership and accountability per area. This role owns the Customer and Commercial analytics domain outright.
• You’ll lead a small, focused team, partner directly with commercial and customer stakeholders, and build an analytics capability that drives real business decisions – not just reports. The emphasis is on permanent thinking: someone who builds lasting capability, not someone who clears a backlog.

Team You’ll Lead

• Approximately 3 Data Analysts
• 1 Data Scientist

Key Responsibilities

• Own the analytics agenda, priorities, and roadmap for the Customer and Commercial domains
• Lead, coach, and develop the team of analysts and data scientist
• Partner with commercial, customer, category, and related stakeholders to identify high-value analytical opportunities
• Ensure analytical products are decision-oriented, business-trusted, and built for ongoing use – not one-off deliverables
• Collaborate with the Data Management Lead on shared semantic models, metric definitions, and data quality for customer and commercial measures
• Build team capability and foster a culture of ownership and accountability
• Contribute to the broader maturation of analytics – from reactive and broad, to domain-led and purposeful

Requirements

• Significant experience leading analytics teams in a commercial, customer, or retail environment
• Strong commercial mindset – able to connect analytical work directly to business outcomes
• Hands-on proficiency with Power BI, SQL, and related analytics tools and techniques
• Experience managing a mixed team of data analysts and a data scientist
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills

Advantageous

• Retail commercial or customer analytics background
• Experience in customer analytics, commercial performance measurement, or related advanced analytical techniques

Role Details

• Employment type: 12-month renewable Contract
• Location: Kuils River, Cape Town (on-site)
• Target start: October 2026 / phased into FY27
• Annual package circa R1 350 000.00
