Assistant Chef at University of Mpumalanga (UMP)

Job Primary Purpose

• The main purpose of this position is to oversee all kitchen operations by monitoring food preparation, presentation, and service in accordance with approved menus daily. The incumbent will maximize the revenue generated from catering by keeping food costs very low.

Minimum Requirements:

• M + 3-year Diploma in Culinary Studies/ Hospitality/ Professional Cookery or relevant chef qualification at Diploma level.
• 3 years’ experience as a Chef in a high-volume kitchen/ restaurant.
• Computer literacy is a must.
• Registration with any relevant professional board will be an added advantage.

• Knowledge of food safety management protocols and kitchen hygiene
• Sound knowledge of food cost control
• The ability to train and assess students in food production 
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment
• Good culinary skills.

• Ability to operate industrial kitchen appliances
• Ability to work with senior management and other team members in the hotel
• Ability to deal with customer complaints
• Ability to demonstrate and promote flexibility and adaptability towards changing working hours and shifts according to the requirements of a 24-hour hotel operation (working weekends, public holidays, and shifts)
