    Associate, COVID-19 Program

    The first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2019 and in January 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) and subsequently in March 2020 as a pandemic. To respond to COVID-19, South Africa’s National Department of Health (NDoH) set up an Incident Management Team (IMT) and partnered working nationally and provincially to coordinate the health response and provide stewardship and strategic guidance to ensure successful and sustained implementation. The COVID-19 pandemic is having a profound impact on South Africa’s health care system and has impacted overall health outcomes, specifically in the areas of child immunisation, comprehensive SRMNH, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and HIV, and management of chronic diseases. As such, there is a need to support COVID-19 efforts while working cross functionally with a view of providing an integrated approach to services.

    Position Overview

    CHAI seeks a highly entrepreneurial, energetic, results-oriented and self-motivated individual to support CHAI’s COVID-19 efforts while working cross functionally with a view of providing an integrated approach to communication to drive behavior change and effectively improve health outcomes. The Associate will join a diverse team to support the Department of Health (DoH) develop and implement a brand strategy for mHealth intervetions, specifically targeting adolescents and youth in South Africa, including youth that are most marginalized and hard to reach. The Associate will also be responsible for developing and coordinating high-impact partnerships with the DoH, implementing NGOs, social businesses and educational institutions to build workable and sustainable solutions to strengthen self-care digital tools
    targeting the adolescent market. This role is focused on implementation and will require a very “hands-on” approach.

    Successful candidates will have excellent communications skills, be able to function independently, be self-motivated, can thrive in challenging environments, be able to adapt to the differing needs of the program and have a strong commitment to excellence. The Associate will provide support both strategically and analytically.

    The position is based in Pretoria, South Africa and reports to the Program Manager for Community Based Programs and Communication.

    • Brand strategy, including the setting of style guides, brand guidelines, brand vision and value proposition;
    • Planning and execution of all communications and media actions on all channels, including online and offline;
    • Assisting with content development, new digital offerings as well as developing new business opportunities;
    • Creating and managing marketing literature and promotional collateral to establish and maintain product branding, ensuring designs and messages meet the DoH’s brand and regulatory guidelines;
    • Managing the budget for advertising and promotional items;
    • Customer insights analysis, monitoring market trends and identifying potential areas in which to explore based upon consumer needs;
    • Monitor, evaluate and report on mHealth performance;
    • Monitoring consumer reactions through focus groups and market research;
    • Support NDoH in all aspects of mHealth strategy with planning and implementation activities, ensuring CHAI’s ongoing alignment with the DoH strategic goals and priorities;
    • Translate objectives provided by the government, donors, and other partner organizations into clear activity plans, and provide guidance to the Community Based Programs and Communication team and DoH on prioritization of initiatives;
    • Manage and establish collaborative relationships with the DoH, suppliers, partner organizations and other relevant stakeholders;
    • Participate in working group(s) to support evidence generation for implementation of initiatives to optimize access to digital self-care;
    • Ensure communication and alignment of activities across government, partner stakeholder’s efforts and across other CHAI programs in South Africa to ensure coordination and successful execution of the Community Based Programs and Communications program;
    • Represent the program in meetings and workshops;
    • Partner with the Community Based Programs and Communications Program Manager to provide thought leadership and strategic guidance to the team;
    • Support the Community Based Programs and Communication Program Manager on key deliverables and ad-hoc requirements, as needed.
    • Post-graduate degree/diploma in Marketing, Communications, Advertising, Public Health, Business, Economics or a related field;
    • Minimum of three years demonstrable brand management experience in a private or public sector setting and with increasing levels of responsibility and experience;
    • High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint;
    • Entrepreneurial mindset; demonstrated ability to work independently on complex projects and solve challenging problems, in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment;
    • Strategically minded, able to think creatively around long-term program objectives and the detailed steps necessary to achieve these goals;
    • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with a strong commitment to excellence, both internally and externally, and with limited structural support;
    • Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills;
    • Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and ability to build strong professional relationships with a range of stakeholders in a challenging, multi-cultural environment;
    • Demonstrated clear understanding of brand awareness, the marketing mix and behavioural change communication;
    • Ability to navigate complex governmental and organizational processes and favorably influence decision-making in a professional and collaborative manner;
    • English language fluency, both written and verbal.

    Advantages

    • Experience in managing a marketing team within the health and wellness space (private or public space);
    • Experience with relationship management at both a national government level and community organisation level;
    • Willingness to travel as and when required.
