    Associate Professor (P000286)

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • The Associate Professor is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort at the Business School. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in the leadership, scholarship, research and/or professional activities of the school.
    • The successful candidate will be expected to supervise MBA and doctoral degree candidates. The successful candidate will primarily teach in the field of Strategy and may also contribute to other postgraduate offerings.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    Teaching & Learning

    • Demonstrate excellence in postgraduate teaching by submitting a reflective portfolio that critically reflects on teaching and learning practices.
    • Develop and implement effective learning environments, including face-to-face and blended approaches.
    • Utilize learning management systems (LMS) and online platforms for teaching and learning.
    • Employ effective assessment practices and reflect on student feedback.
    • Participate in relevant conferences, workshops, and excellence awards in teaching and learning.
    • Successfully supervise or co-supervise 2 MBA mini dissertations annum as ratified by the Faculty Higher Degrees
    • Committee.
    • Complete the CTL and other T & L development courses.  
    • Develop and update study guides according to CTL requirements.
    • Integrating responsible management and sustainable development goals (SDGs) into the curriculum.
    • Proven evidence of the impact on and transfer of competencies to students.
    • Teach on the MBA and/ or PGDip programme. 

    Research, Innovation, and/or Creative Outputs

    • Engage in research activities and contribute to the school’s research efforts.
    • Demonstrate relevance and intellectual creativity in research or creative outputs, as peer review confirms.
    • Publish at least one article in an accredited journal and one paper in a peer-reviewed conference proceeding.
    • Participate in collaborative international research projects.

    Academic Leadership, Management, and University Service

    • Participate in school and faculty committees, contributing to the overall academic leadership and management.
    • Provide guidance and support to students, including advising and recruitment activities.
    • Active involvement and participation in Think Tanks and Pitso’s.
    • Presenting at least one Bon-Bon annually.
    • Active participation in the scientific committee.
    • Active participation in business school board meetings.
    • Active participation in the programme meetings.
    • External examiner for MBAs and PhDs.
    • Internal examiner/moderator for MBA and PhDs.
    • Consulting work (application of expertise).
    • Conference organization committee member. 

    Social Responsiveness

    • Engage in community engagement initiatives, such as media comment, education, or activities benefiting specific communities.
    • Participate in awards, prizes, grants, or other acknowledgements that recognise service at any level.
    • Contribute to academic citizenship and demonstrate a commitment to sharing expertise with the community.
    • Involvement in professional activities.

    Minimum requirements

    • A PhD (NQF level 10) specializing in Strategy, General Management or related fields.
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ teaching experience at postgraduate level (preferably at a business school).
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience with the ability to develop programme outcomes and module content at MBA/PGDip and Executive Development Levels.
    • Proven facilitation experience in marketing management.
    • A record of research supervision and publishing articles in accredited academic journals.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

    • A minimum of five (5) years’ Industry-related experience.
    • Proficiency in designing and executing executive education programmes or customised training initiatives for industry clients.
    • Practical experience in conducting research commissioned by industry clients.
    •  International research or teaching experience or exposure to international academic environments.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet.
    • Clear evidence of strength in teaching and learning in a blended environment and research and innovation activity.
    • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the
    • learning and collaboration environment.
    • Knowledge, skills, and practical experience in the field of Data-driven Decision Making, Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Natural language processing, or Machine Learning.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills.
    • Demonstrated a high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
    • Demonstrated language skills (in English and at least one other official South African Language) to function optimally within the multi-lingual environment of the NWU.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Have excellent people and conflict resolution skills.
    • Can apply time management and work independently (on their own and without supervision).
    • Must be able to work well in a group.
    • Demonstrate initiative and leadership in research and teaching and learning.
    • The ability to maintain effective and constructive interpersonal relationships, as well as to motivate and persuade others to be effective, efficient, achieve agreed goals timely, behave harmoniously, and become or remain interdependent.
    • A clear vision, effective, clear, and timely two-way communication, strong results, and people orientation, instilling trust, driving diversity, transformation, and ethics, and managing conflict proactively.
    • A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
    • Good planning and organising skills as well as good report writing skills.
    • Effective time-management skills.
