    Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer and Co-Chair to the NRF Chair in City Region Economies (Contract appointment: 3 years)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    •  Provide leadership in pursuit of the NRF chair’s strategic plan with regard to research, teaching and engaged scholarship.
    •  Conduct high quality research and publish in accredited journals.
    •  Contribute to the teaching of the NRF Chair at postgraduate level by supervising students and helping them with their theses and research projects.
    •  Attend and speak at conferences, research colloquia, workshops and seminars in order to enhance your research and knowledge, and to raise the profile of the NRF Chair.
    •  Identify opportunities and apply for external funding for research, whether as an individual or in collaboration with other team members of the NRF Chair.
    •  Help to promote the scholarly reputation, research and teaching of the NRF Chair initiative through the media, the newsletter and the website.
    •  Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with relevant research, civil society, government, industry and professional organisations.
    •  Assist with the various administrative activities of the NRF Chair, such as overseeing the 
    • capacity building efforts.

    Inherent requirements:
    Senior Lecturer: 

    •  PhD on NQF Level 10 in Economics/ Planning/ Geography/ Development Studies or a cognate subject with a special interest in Urban/ Regional/ Spatial Economics and Development.
    •  Proven experience in the presentation of papers/posters at national scholarly conferences.
    •  Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
    •  An NRF rating or demonstrated potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
    •  Proven experience in supervision of graduated master’s-degree students.
    •  A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
    •  Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher-education levels.

    Associate Professor:

    •  Experience as external examiner for postgraduate students.
    •  Proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national conferences, where there is evidence of peer review of papers.
    •  Acted as an editorial board member of high-quality national scholarly journals.
    •  Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scientific area of scholarship.
    •  An NRF rating of C3 or equivalent status.
    •  Proven experience in the supervision of graduated master’s-degree students.
    •  A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
    •  Served as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher-education levels, OR showed evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.

    Recommendations:

    •  Experience in research and teaching of Urban/ Regional/ Spatial Economics and Development.
    •  A minimum of five (5) years' lecturing experience in higher education.
    •  Experience or potential to source external research funding.
    •  Demonstrate potential to publish in high quality journals in urban studies.
    •  A track record of teaching in English.
