Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum Requirements: Associate Professor

• A Doctorate degree in any of the specialization areas of the Faculty of Education.
• At least six (6) years’ relevant experience at university level, comprising of proven academic management experience/ research management experience.
• Outstanding record of research outputs: Publications in peer-reviewed accredited journals, presentation of papers at professional conferences, successful supervision of Masters and Doctoral students relevant to the Education field.
• Recipient of research grants and awards.
• Experience as an external examiner/moderator.
• Proven ability to manage projects and project teams at the institution.
• Knowledge of the HEQSF processes.

Recommendations: Associate Professor

• A NRF Rating C or higher.
• High standing nationally or internationally.
• Previous experience in a similar position or at an equivalent or higher level.

Minimum Requirements: Senior Lecturer

• A Doctorate degree in any of the specialization areas of the Faculty of Education.
• At least four (4) years’ relevant experience at university level, comprising of proven academic management/research management experience.
• Publications in peer-reviewed accredited journals, presentation of papers at professional conferences, successful supervision of Masters and Doctoral students relevant to the Education field.
• Recipient of research grants and awards.
• Proven ability to manage projects and project teams at the institution.
• Knowledge of the HEQSF processes.

Recommendations: Senior Lecturer

• Experience as external examiner/moderator.
• A NRF Rating C or higher.
• Previous experience in a similar position or at an equivalent or higher level. (The selection panel’s recommendation and assessment will be aligned with the institutional promotions criteria)

Minimum Requirements: Head of Department

• A Doctorate degree in any of the specialization areas of the Faculty of Education.
• A minimum of five (5) years' relevant experience, of which three (3) years’ must be as a Senior Lecturer or above.
• The five (5) years mentioned above must include two (2) years management experience related to the functions of an HOD (i.e academic and research management, financial and HR management in a department.
• Research and supervision experience commensurate with the level of Senior Lecturer or above which include a record of research outputs, publications in peer-reviewed accredited journals; presentations of papers at professional conferences).
• Successful supervision of Masters and Doctoral students relevant to the Education field.
• Exposure to proposal writing and research funding applications.
• Please note the appointment will be made in line with the institutional Rotational HOD guidelines.

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

• Overall leadership and responsibility for RTI in the Faculty.
• Compilation and implementation of the research strategy for the faculty in support of Dean’s mandate.
• Co-ordination and facilitation of the allocation and appropriation of research funds within the Faculty (URF and Confcom).
• Oversight, in conjunction with Department Heads, of Adjunct - Professors, Research Fellows and Postdoctoral Fellows.
• Oversight of the implementation of staff RTI related capacity development.
• Maintenance of quality, retention of postgraduate students and increase in postgraduate intake.
• Creation of an enabling research infrastructure in the faculty.
• Postgraduate supervision.
• Measurement of and report on RTI progress to the Dean, Faculty Board, and Senate Research Committee.
• Active pursuit of external funding opportunities.
• Ensuring enabling environment for research chairs and international partnerships.
• Oversight of the Honours programmes offered in the Faculty.
• Represent the Faculty in appropriate committees.
• Create an enabling research infrastructure in the Faculty.
