    Associate Professor (V002764)

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning

    • Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules. Development of new modules and programmes.

    Research

    • Conducting academic research (publishing of research papers, etc.) and supervision of postgraduate (PhD and Master’s) students.

    Administration/Management

    • Help with administrative, organisational and management tasks within the subject group.

    Minimum requirements

    • A PhD in Mathematical Statistics (NQF level 10).
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience with a proven publication track record, including a solid record of academic publications in accredited journals.
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including lecturing modules for which the candidate has sole responsibility.
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the administration of large class groups, including taking a leading role in coordinating and managing the administrative duties associated with large class groups.
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in supervising students at PhD and Master’s level, with a proven track record of successfully supervising such students to completion. 

    ADDED ADVANTAGE:

    • Membership of the South African Statistical Association (SASA).

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    The candidate must be able to:

    • Analyse data using advanced statistical techniques by means of suitable statistical computer packages (such as SAS, R, SPSSSPSS, and STATISTICA).
    • Provide guidance with regards to data collection.
    • Present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
    • Act as group coordinator for modules with multiple groups.
    • Handle large undergraduate classes.
    • Supervise honours students.
    • Communicate well in English (verbally and in writing). 

    BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

    • Work independently, but also as a team.
    • Have very good people skills.
    • Professional and ethical behaviour.
    • Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff.
