    AWS Shield - System Development Engineer

    Description

    The AWS Shield Response Team (SRT) is the support operations and system development team that is responsible for building and maintaining application security and threat research tooling, evolving the DDoS attack response automation tooling, and driving high-severity event resolution on behalf of AWS infrastructure and AWS Shield customers.
    As a System Development Engineer for SRT you will help lead development projects and write code for applications that provide critical capabilities to on-call engineers and AWS customers in order to minimize availability impact and reduce operational pain. You will own infrastructure and deployment pipelines that underpin the application threat intelligence tools owned by SRT. You are both tactical and strategic, leading DDoS event response and translating learnings into innovative solutions that help prevent re-occurrence. Customers will rely on your expertise to help review and improve application architecture and operational best practices that are key to application security.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or quantitative field OR 5 years related industry experience in addition to the below requirements:
    • 3+ years of experience in at least one modern programming language such as Ruby, Java, or C/C++
    • Business level proficiency in the English language

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 7+ years of experience in application and network security engineering
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Demonstrable expertise in distributed system design, large-scale data processing, or fleet or infrastructure automation.
    • Knowledge and experience with major Internet protocols; specifically BGP, TCP, and UDP
    • Knowledge and experience with AWS services commonly used to build web applications (eg. Amazon EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon CloudFront, or Amazon Route 53)
    • Knowledge of DDoS attacks and the best options for mitigation
    • Exceptional understanding of security vulnerabilities, attacker exploit techniques, and methods for remediation of such.
    • Experience protecting large-scale applications using Web Application Firewalls (WAFs), network firewalls, and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS).
    • Experience designing, building or testing web and API-based architectures.
    • Experience communicating technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
    • Exceptional presentation and written English communication skills; high degree of comfort with technical and executive audiences.
    • Experience scripting in common languages (e.g. Ruby, Python)
