    Barley Technician

    The Role Purpose

    The key purpose is to execute and ensure that contracted barley quality is managed according to agreed company practices and policies throughout the crop cycle with specific focus on harvest and storage management practices. Actively support the local barley industry, through relevant stakeholder engagement, to manage processes maximizing malting specification barley quality from local barley growing regions.​

    The key responsibilities of the Barley Technician (but not limited to):

    • Align and execute against barley tactical plan and logistical load plan
    • Manage and Ensure required samples are dispatched and received from depots in accordance with contractual requirements
    • Escalate sampling non-compliance and ensure closure of any identified gaps
    • Maintain accurate, detailed and traceable records in accordance with changing requirements
    • Ensure that all necessary intake and other related quality data / information from depots are reviewed and cross checks conducted
    • Conduct planned barley quality analysis on all received samples: Germination Energy 4ml, Germination Energy 8ml%, Moisture %, Total Nitrogen Germination Capacity (Tetrazolium), Germination Capacity (Hydrogen Peroxide) and Grading
    • Communicate results to all identified and relevant stakeholders
    • Ensure that NIR ring test is active and supported by all participating depots contracted to store barley
    • Ensure master reference tests for nitrogen and moisture is conducted weekly and NIR drift accommodated
    • Participate in dispute management
    • Participate in scheduled depot audits and ensure that findings are agreed and communicated with all stakeholders
    • Prepare and share a quarterly barley quality performance deck / depot with all stakeholders
    • Own the audit action list and actively seek to drive closure in line with agreed priority actions • Assist in training and sharing barley quality grading knowledge with the industry
    • Ensure Good Laboratory Practices is maintained as identified by VPO and SANAS (once implemented)

    The ideal candidate is someone who holds a B.Tech (Engineering or Science) OR equivalent qualification.

    Miminum requirements include (but not limited to):

    • Mobile and able to travel locally
    • Valid drivers license (minimum code B)
    • Willingness to continuously self develop and improve skill set
    • Previous experience working within a laboratory environment
    • Highly organized and detailed orientated
    • Ability to self manage, disciplined and results driven
    • Highly confident and Strong execution skills
    • Effective conflict resolution skills and excellent communicator
    • Data management and a basic understanding of statistics
    • Intermediate to Advanced MS Excel proficiency
    • Establishing collaborative working relationships
    • Languages: English as the working language, other languages are an advantage
    • Certified Grain Grader
    • Yellow Belt
    • Strong presentation skills
    • Understanding of Vertical Plant Operation
