Database Administrator at Clickatell

Requirements
The role of our Champion:

• Ensuring our development and production databases are tuned for optimal performance and minimal downtime
• Work closely with developers to define and evolve our data model, support data analytics activities, and ensure scalability
• Manage the full life cycle of database schema design and implementation, including script management, from development through production
• Design and implementation of high-availability database features using various replication and disaster recovery methodologies
• Implementation of database schema changes in a live production environment requiring minimal downtime
• Support of applications and environment while working with on-site and remote development teams
• As a Senior, play a thought-leadership role within the Communities of Practice (COP), supporting the Tech Leads in driving the vision of the COP Core Competencies. Mentorship to less experienced developers and establishment of best practises
• Convert business requirements into technical solutions.
• Perform problem resolution and root cause analysis along with recommending and implementing preventative techniques
• Ensure operational database and integration systems are functioning within specification and provide optimisation where necessary
• Perform tests and produce results to ensure accurate compliance with business requirements
• Manage priorities across design and development activities as well as defect resolution
• Interact with technical and business stakeholders to create solutions and solve problems collaboratively
• Assist in data analysis and data modelling where required
• Knowledge of a scripting language such as Python or Perl is advantageous
• Protect Clickatell’s information, intellectual property and corporate data systems in accordance with prescribed guidelines
• Familiarise yourself with all risk and compliance related policies and procedures as communicated by relevant functions
• Complete Risk and Compliance training as per internal requirements
• Ensure adequate protection of the Clickatell brand and reputation
• Required to be part of oncall weekly rotation 24/7

Our Champions journey so far:

• The core focus of this role will be database technologies such as Cassandra 3.0.5, MySQL, PostgreSQL
• Proficiency with Linux (CentOS), and expertise with cloud-based services related to database administration
• Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies and embracing of their values and principles
• Have significant experience developing Enterprise Grade applications at scale
• Have excellent technical documentation skills, and excellent communication across multiple cultures and time zones
• Familiarity with Version Control systems such as GitLab
• Familiarity with the other technologies used at Clickatell would be an advantageous, they are:
• Databases: Cassandra, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Amazon S3, ETL, BI reporting and data integration tools
• Scripting Language: Python
• Other: AWS (Amazon Web Services), JIRA
• Monitoring: Datadog, Icinga and Kibana
• A background working in a high-volume payment transaction environment, or mobile technology platforms and systems integration would be advantageous and be able to demonstrate a sustained track record of delivering high-quality outputs, on-time and to product or business specifications
• Computer literate: Proficient in development environment (Linux) as well as competence in MS Office Suite
• A National Diploma, B-Tech or bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or informatics. In addition, formal training in DBA, business intelligence or design would be advantageous
• High transactional development environments and Business intelligence experience will be advantageous
• Experience of working in n-Tier, Client Server and Database environment. Exposure to Business Intelligence, data warehousing (dimensional modelling) and clustering technologies (such as MySQL cluster) will be advantageous
• Relevant knowledge in different development, database and business intelligence tools, techniques and environments to develop and deliver quality applications and documentation
• Experience with data transformation tools such as PostgreSQL ETL advantageous
• Complete familiarity with Agile and traditional methods, particularly Waterfall, Scrum and Kanban
• 4+ years of production DBA experience
• 2+ years of experience managing databases in cloud environments
