Design Engineer: Electrical (Building Services) - JHB at GIBB Engineering and Architecture

Core purpose:

The core purpose of the job focuses on design and development of construction projects for building services (Power and Lighting), electrical infrastructure and other structures. The job requires close liaison with architects, project managers and contractors to ensure that construction projects are designed according to specifications and that they meet building safety, reliability, and sustainability standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop Electrical Building Services construction project specifications and designs based on customer requirements and building design standards.
• Collaborate with architects, contractors and other construction professionals to ensure that designs are feasible and meet all client project requirements.
• Working knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software and other engineering tools to create and refine construction project designs. Creating 3D models and animations using CAD, Revit and BIM software.
• Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses to determine the viability of new designs and construction techniques.
• Develop and maintain project and contract documentation, including design reports and drawings and specifications.
• Ensure that construction projects meet statutory and regulatory requirements and adhere to building safety, reliability, and sustainability standards.
• Collaborate with members of the multi-disciplinary project team to ensure that construction projects are completed on time, within budget and in compliance with defined quality standards.
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost savings and make recommendations to senior project management team members.
• Conduct regular project team meetings and provide guidance and support to the multi-disciplinary team members.
• Ensure that all project stakeholders are kept informed of project progress and project planning and milestone changes.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

• BSc/BEng Degree or BTech (Electrical). Must provide Certificate with transcript.
• Registered with ECSA as a Professional Engineer. Must provide Certificate with registration number.
• At least 10 years’ experience in engineering.
• Strong technical background in engineering design and construction.
• Five (5) of the ten (10) years post professional registration (Pr.Eng) should be in domestic/low voltage design experience including Construction Management.

 Core Competencies/Requirements

• Have a strong technical background in Electrical Building Services engineering, as well as excellent design and problem-solving skills.
• Have a good working knowledge of construction implementation processes and standards as well as project management principles.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role.
• Proficiency in industry-specific software or tools including ACAD, BIM and/or Revit is required.
• Must have MS Office experience.
• Must be able to work independently.
• Must be able to guide and lead supporting staff.
