    Director: School of Language Education (PD00061)

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • To manage the operational delivery of the faculty strategy and plan. In addition, provide functional and academic leadership and quality assurance across campuses and in distance education in respect of Teaching, Learning, and Research in Language Education, and in Community Engagement projects.
    • Direct and manage the B.Ed programme as an integrated programme across campuses of the NWU and in the distance mode of delivery ensuring the quality of all administrative processes and the quality of the aligned academic offering

    Teaching and Learning.

    • Promote excellent learning and teaching and reposition the NWU to attain the size and shape required by market direction decision.
    • Teaching a variety of modules in the school within a multi-modal environment.
    • Guide curriculum transformation in Language Education to ensure relevance in teacher education.

    Research and Innovation.

    • Intensify research and innovation in the school.

    Community Engagement and Service Learning.

    • Integrate and align community engagement with teaching- learning and research to develop a culture of active citizenship.
    • Promote the Scholarship of Engagement: Community Engagement, Engaged TL and Engaged research and environmental sustainability.

    Student Value.

    • Develop a clearly differentiated student value proposition.

    Staff Development.

    • Develop and retain excellent staff and create an equitable staff and student profile.

    People management.

    • Leadership and management; manage employment equity, diversity and transformation.
    • Risk and compliance management.
    • Risk management, compliance and business continuity.

    Minimum requirements

    • A PhD in Language Education or related field, for example Applied Linguistics (NQF Level 10).
    • A professional Education qualification (NQF level 7).
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ functional and subject related experience in a primary and/or secondary teaching and tertiary teaching environment.
    • A minimum of three (3) years’ management experience in a tertiary environment in the relevant industry/ professional leadership (at least in a programme/subject group or relevant internal or external organisation).
    • Evidence of supervising post graduate students (M and PhD level) to completion.
    • Proven publication record in accredited scholarly journals - relevant to the field of Language Education.
    • Involvement in TPrac and teaching and/or research activities at community level e.g., Service to the wider higher education environment (reviewer; consultant; on committees) at national/international level.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES:

    • Registration with SACE.
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ senior leadership experience in a tertiary environment.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Subject knowledge: Language Education.
    • Teaching skills: Language Education Methodology and Didactics.
    • Assessment knowledge and competencies.
    • High level of knowledge about the B.Ed qualification in different programmes: Early Childhood; Foundation Phase; Intermediate
    • Phase, and Senior and FET Phase.
    • Computer literate (Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Supervision or co-supervision of postgraduate qualifications (M.Ed. and PhD’s).
