    Electronic Technician – ITB

    Introduction

    • We are currently seeking to employ a suitably qualified person with knowledge of the Manufacturing of flexible plastics and packaging to take on this challenging role of an Electronic Technician. The incumbent will report to the Maintenance Manager, and this position is based at ITB Plastics factory in Isithebe.

    Job description

    • Experience in a flexible plastic packaging industry is highly advantageous.
    • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair electronic and electrical control faults on production machinery and associated equipment.
    • Maintain, fault-find and support PLC, HMI, industrial drive, VSD, SSD, inverter, instrumentation and machine control systems.
    • Install, configure, parameterise, and commission industrial drives and electronic control equipment across various platforms.
    • Identify recurring equipment failures, conduct root-cause analysis and implement appropriate corrective actions.
    • Read and interpret electrical, electronic, instrumentation and control-system drawings.
    • Conduct functional testing and diagnostic measurements on electronic equipment, control circuits, sensors, instrumentation and associated systems.
    • Calibrate equipment where required and ensure equipment operates within specified tolerances.
    • Maintain appropriate backups of drive parameters, PLC/HMI programs, configurations and other critical electronic system information.
    • Coordinate electronic equipment repairs with approved external service providers and OEMs, including technical assessment, repair verification and recommissioning.
    • Support the development and maintenance of critical electronic spares based on equipment criticality, failure frequency, replacement cost, availability, lead time and production impact.
    • Participate in planned and routine maintenance activities relating to electronic and control equipment.
    • Provide technical support to production and maintenance teams to minimise downtime and improve equipment reliability, OEE
    • Maintain appropriate technical records and provide clear fault-finding and repair reports.
    • Ensure compliance with company health and safety requirements, lockout procedures, quality systems and food-packaging safety requirements.

    Minimum requirements

    • Matric or equivalent.
    • N6 or B-Tech Degree in Electronics or Electrical (Core subject Electronics).
    • Trade test in Instrumentation or Electrical.
    • 3-5 years’ experience within a similar capacity.
    • Experience in a flexible plastic packaging industry is highly advantageous.
    • Strong practical knowledge of industrial electronics, automation and machine control systems.
    • Strong practical knowledge of industrial drives, including installation, programming, commissioning, diagnostics and advanced fault-finding across various drive platforms.
    • Experience with PLCs, HMIs, VSDs, SSDs, inverters, instrumentation, sensors, encoders and associated control systems.
    • Experience with Siemens, Lenze, Delta or similar industrial automation and drive platforms would be advantageous.
    • Strong analytical and systematic fault-finding ability with the ability to identify root causes rather than only addressing symptoms.
    • Ability to interpret electrical/electronic drawings and understand machine control sequences and interlocks.
    • Ability to work effectively with OEMs, specialist electronic repair companies and other technical service providers.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical fault and repair reports.
    • Ability to work independently as well as effectively within the maintenance and production teams.
    • Ability to prioritise multiple technical issues and work effectively under production pressure.
    • Experience within extrusion, flexographic printing, lamination, slitting, bagmaking or similar continuous manufacturing environments would be advantageous.
    • Prepared to provide shift, weekend, overtime and standby support when required.
