    Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary/Assistant - Ward

    Description

    Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary will be responsible for direct and/or in direct nursing care of a patient or group of patients and will function under the direct and/ or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse.

    This includes caring for the patient, his possessions, documentation and the control and economical use of stock and equipment in Theatre.

    The Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary will serve under supervision of the Registered Nurse in theatre. The team member will perform nursing duties in accordance with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), Department of Health (DOH) and National Core standards.

    Further Role Breakdown

    • Practice patient care according to his/her Scope of Practice and assumes total responsibility for these activities.
    • Be active in preparing, controlling and replenishment of stock, of the ward for the procedure list of the day.
    • Support the patient on their arrival into the ward pre-and post-operatively.
    • Monitor a patient’s physiological and physical parameters.
    • Provide appropriate treatment until the patient has recovered from the effects of the anesthesia and/or surgery.
    • Assess the patient in order to ensure they have recovered and can be discharged.
    • Evaluate the care given during each phase.
    • Contributes to the holistic care of patients.
    • Effective Risk prevention and management.
    • Effective communication with patients regarding their car
    • The promotion of health and wellbeing.
    • Practices the principles of infection prevention and all Standard precautions.
    • Promotes and maintains good public relations with patients, relatives and visitors.
    • Executes all procedures according to hospital standards.
    • Refer all complaints according to hospital protocol
    • Carries out all departmental duties as assigned by the team leader
    • Provides the delivery of evidence-based nursing care.
    • Ensure that all patients have an appropriate nursing care plan.
    • Communicate with the ward RN regarding any change in health status of the patient.
    • Administer and manage medication in accordance with the Hospital policy and as described by SANC scope of practice
    • Ensure the continuity of patient care by providing a thorough hand over to the theatre and recovery room staff
    • Check the emergency trolley and defibrillator/AED.
    • Check emergency resuscitation drugs and record.
    • Asses the types of surgery to be performed and expected number of patients.
    • Check monitoring equipment and ensure that oxygen and suction is in good working order.
    • Check the emergency call system.
    • Compliance with documentation policy.
    • Complete all relevant documentation and report all abnormalities to the person in charge of the ward.
    • Ensures that all documentation is maintained accurately and timeously reflecting ward procedures and care
    • Leave ward clean and tidy at the end of the day’s lists and prepared for the next day before going off duty.
    • Listen to and read post op orders as handed over by recovery room nurse.
    • Ensure proper and complete handover to the theatre/recovery staff.
    • Co-sign drug check list and drug registers with the ward RN
    • Sign check list of emergency trolley
    • Ongoing audit of health records to ensure compliance.
    • Ensures all stock is well controlled and managed, charged and credited appropriately.

    • Maintains a therapeutic, clean and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards.
    • Adheres to the Hospital’s medical waste management principles and all other waste management principles.
    • Maintains a safe working environment in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act.
    • Reports potential/actual risks identified.
    • Responsible for ensuring correct use, cleaning and storage of equipment.
    • Reports equipment needing repair or replacement to the ward RN.
    • Always maintain professional conduct and standards in accordance with the Hospital’s policies and procedures.
    • Always maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
    • To take responsibility for own nursing actions and professional conduct.
    • Functions within own level of competence, within the legally recognized scope of practice and within all relevant legislation.
    • Assesses own practice and undertakes activities to improve practice and meet identified learning goals on an ongoing basis.
    • Assumes responsibility for own personal and professional development.
    • Assumes responsibility for maintaining competence in CPR/BLS.
    • Projects a positive professional image.
    • Promotes and maintains good working and interpersonal relationships with management, colleagues and doctors.

    Requirements

    • Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
    • Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary qualification.
    • Current registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC).
    • BLS qualification advantageous.
    • Minimum of 5 years as an enrolled nurse assistant.
    • Post-Op nursing experience is essential.
    • Floor nurse and Anaesthetic experience essential.
    • Experience within private hospital environment advantageous.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of sterilization, disinfection, and aseptic and sterile technique
    • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and patient safety.
    • Knowledge of Infection Control & Prevention
    • To demonstrate an understanding of the surgical procedure by anticipating the needs of the multi-disciplinary team members.
