Job Description

• Our client, a market leader in the export sector is looking to hire a Fruit Buyer, based at their office in Tyger Valley, Cape Town
• The Fruit Buyer must be an expert in grapes, citrus or deciduous to join their growing team.  The role requires someone with an extensive network in the fruit industry who is passionate about fruits and well-versed in procurement processes

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Fruit Procurement:  Source and purchase grapes, deciduous and citrus fruit while ensuring top-quality selection.  Establish and maintain strong relationships with South African suppliers and farmers  
• Industry Networking:   Utilize your extensive network in the fruit industry to build and sustain productive partnerships with suppliers and distributors, fostering strong relationships between our client and its suppliers
• Strategic Negotiation:   Secure cost-effective procurement without compromising quality by negotiating favourable terms with suppliers. Manage claims and settlements for clients while handling price negotiations with growers and packhouses
• Effective Communication:  Maintain clear and professional communication with stakeholders across the supply chain. Prepare reports, deliver presentations, and implement systems to streamline operations. Keep Business Development Managers informed about fruit availability and range
• Market Analysis:  Monitor industry trends, pricing shifts, and regulatory updates to stay ahead in the fruit export sector
• Quality Assurance:   Work closely with quality control teams to ensure all procured fruits meet high standards. Oversee quality checks at farms, packhouses, and cold storage facilities
• Supply Chain Optimization: Manage procurement logistics, ensuring timely deliveries and maintaining optimal inventory levels. Implement and oversee seasonal programs for efficient supply chain operations 

Minimum Requirements: 

Education and Experience: 

• Matric
• Relevant tertiary qualification will be advantageous  
• At least 5 years' experience in Fruit Procurement - grapes, citrus or deciduous procurement / buying fruit (grapes preferred) 

Knowledge & Skills: 

• Demonstrate extensive knowledge of fruit seasonality, quality standards, local South African and International Fruit growers and packhouses
• Export Knowledge: Proficiency in export processes and regulations related to the fruit trade
• Industry Network: established connections within the fruit industry, including suppliers, distributors and key stakeholders
• Negotiation Expertise:  Proven ability to negotiate favourable terms with suppliers and optimize procurement costs
• Technical Proficiency:  Skilled in using online portals and MS Office Suite
