    Gender Expert

    Job Summary

    This opportunity relates to a high profile project in the healthcare sector where specific and expert consideration to gender related issues will be key to the successful outcome of the project.

    The Gender Expert will:

    • Partake in initiation and planning activities related to the kick-off, mobilisation and fact-finding requirements related to the project
    • Contribute to the preparation of the inception report and work plan
    • Establish contacts and working relations at all relevant levels with:
    • Regional and international government and private organisations applicable to the project including those specific to women’s health 
    • The relevant foundations, delegations and project sponsors
    • NGOs, academics, practitioners and activists insofar as it would advance the interests of the project
    • Assist the project consulting team to:
    • Build on existing information already gathered from project sponsors in their preliminary scoping activities
    • Apply expert gender expert knowledge in context to the existing information to come up with interpretative narrative
    • Create an understanding and awareness of the varieties and complexities of gender issues to all project entities
    • Perform gap analyses tailored to targeted geographies to establish specific needs and challenges
    • Design the appropriate partnership model for each partaking country taking into account the prevailing gender nuances 
    • Identify national and/or regional dependencies and challenges and recommend partnerships and relationships to influence the required outcomes
    • Influence the determination of project timeliness from pilot to implementation phase using key knowledge of the gender issues that are expected to have impact
    • Design a feasibility study that aligns with national requirements in the target territory, that comprises multiple components including gender analysis
    • Navigate the relevant political and contentious issues related to gender issues to circumvent obstacles, objections, delays and challenges hindering the gathering of and reporting on reliable relevant data
    • Analyse both private and public sector gender related aspects influencing project components, including ways to create awareness and assess capacity of such entities to deliver to the project
    • Raise awareness within relevant private sector entities, highlighting the gender issues that are crucial to the project
    • Identify gender discrimination factors that would have any influence on the project across its scope and suggest strategies to circumvent such discrimination
    • Provide reporting and analysis framework with appropriate KPIs around the key gender related data gathered that will influence decisions
    • Consider the need for gender-disaggregation of data for the above purpose
    • Advise on optimal presentation of the data to influence key decision makers
    • Field and influence difficult conversations related to gender subjects that may be coloured by factors including but not limited to political, religious and cultural influences / biases (conscious and unconscious)
    • Identify, plan for and diffuse potential unintended outcomes with political and commercial consequences
    • Perform any other reasonable task required that they are qualified to perform that would influence the success of the projec

    Knowledge and Experience

    • Minimum 5 years relevant experience at a senior level
    • Consulting experience preferable
    • Project management
    • Relationships with UN Agencies
    • Design of gender and development programmes / projects
    • Experience in all key areas of gender analysis and organisational development
    • Creation and design of policies
    • Data analysis and reporting
    • Relevant degree in Gender and Transformation Studies preferred
    • Business related studies advantageous
    • Gender & development related certifications 
    • Socio-economic related certifications advantageous
    • Public diplomacy / international relations related certifications advantageous
    • Fluent in English essential
    • Proficient in French will be highly advantageous
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • An understanding of health systems
    • Understanding of epidemiology is advantageous
    • Understanding of public / government health systems / policies in multiple geographies
    • Researching skills
    • Ability to influence people and situations
