    General Manager: External Communication

    The General Manager: External Communication is the functional lead for External Communications in Group Corporate Affairs This role is responsible for:

    • Strategy formulation and custodian of the Global external communication, social media and sponsorships framework
    • Formulation and delivery of localized events

    The GM: External Comm. reports to the Group Corporate Affairs Executive and is supported by a Manager, Senior Specialist and a Specialist.

    Operational Delivery

    Functional Leadership: As the functional leader of the External Communications vertical, the General Manager is accountable to:

    • Establish, monitor and align the direction, strategy and results of the External Communications vertical, collectively and as individual work areas
    • Lead and drive an integrated, relevant and forward-looking strategy and philosophy for Global External Communication
    • Accountable for the continuous evolution and improvement of external communication, social media and sponsorships frameworks and methodologies to effectively communicate with external parties. 
    • Monitor true-value metrics to measure the impact and benefit of Global External Communication to MTN. Drive continuous improvement across all function verticals
    • Global owner of social media, sponsorships for External Communications.
    • Champion the effort to gain and sustain MTN Leadership commitment to adopt external communication principles consistently across projects and initiatives at Manco
    • Accountable for service delivery excellence for Manco external communications across MTN
    • Active positioning of MTN’s intellectual property and employer of choice brand towards the external marketplace
    • Accountable to periodically present Executive / Management Dashboards on the Global External Communications progress, plans and outcomes, to the Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer and Manco Leadership (as required)

    Job Requirements (Education, Experience and Competencies)

    Education:

    • Minimum of 4 year tertiary degree (specialization in Business Communication/ Literature/ Management/Human Resources/Behavioural Sciences/ as appropriate)
    • MBA or Masters (advantageous)
    • Relevant certification / accreditation / membership with professional body such as South African Communications Association, Exhibition and Event Association of Southern Africa (advantageous)  
    • Fluent in English and language of country preferable

    Experience:

    • Minimum 8-10 years experience
    • Minimum 5 years of senior management experience in External Communications with specific focus on external communications, brand management, sponsorships and events
    • Worked across diverse cultures and geographies
    • Experience working in a medium to large organization
    • Project management experience
    • Telecommunications industry experience
    • Pan Africa multi-cultural experience
