    General Manager

    JOB SUMMARY

    • The General Manager provides leadership across all aspects of the Site whilst managing the costs of running the business.
    • This leader drives and coordinates activities and operations to meet the objectives for food safety, quality, service, integrity, compliance, budgets and colleague & customer satisfaction at the Site.
    • The general manager directs and manages the activities across numerous departments, including but not limited to production, technical, procurement, HR, Planning and engineering.
    • This position requires hands-on leadership.
    • A highly experienced, commercially aware food manufacturing professional with considerable experience and thorough understanding of the key elements for success within FMCG chilled foods
    • Well versed in developing, implementing and leading operational strategy through to success, supporting increased financial profitability, quality performance and Customer satisfaction.
    • A developer of teams and individuals who believes in driving grass roots cultural change and continuous improvement to deliver real growth capability and the environment to provide excellent, sustained business performance.

     
    REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
    Reports to:

    • Chief Operations Officer (Perishables)
    • Works with: Site Management Team (Production/Technical/HR/Planning/Engineering/Procurement)

    Primary Job Functions:

    • Execution of the company strategy, by formulating and communicating Site strategy in line with the business.  Follows through with communication of results, achievements, and requirements.
    • Integration of Safety, Food safety and Quality, into every facet of all activities
    • Achieving Budget - Driving Performance in line with the Strategy
    • With a focus on Gross Profit / Overheads / CTGC / O.T.I.F., and Free Cash Flow
    • Drives and maintains a positive Culture, in line with company Values
    • Ensures Occupational Health & Safety is entrenched – continual improvement towards an injury-free operation
    • Maintains Compliance – Electrical and Plant COC’s, including Insurance requirements, Legal, HR
    • Technical KPI’s – including Statutory & Audits
    • Leadership & internal communication / Providing direct management of key functional managers
    • Communication with Customer on high level Operational agenda where required
    • People & Skills development, Transformation and succession planning
    • Capacity Planning / Peak Planning / & CAPEX
    • Continuous Process Innovation & LEAN manufacturing
    • Participation in annual Site Budget & reviews / & customer Scorecards
    • Leading a collaborative effort across all departments on Site
    • Participates in cross-functional projects together with the leadership and executive teams
    • Oversees key projects, processes and performance reports, including data and analysis. Reviews operations and plans to meet requirements for Sales growth and new opportunities

     

    PERSON SPECIFICATION
    Essential

    • Bachelor’s Degree, or similar in Manufacturing, Food Technical, Engineering, or Business
    • Ten years of experience in the Food manufacturing industry. Perishable food highly preferred.
    • Prior role of Operations or General Management
    • Results orientated, possessing strong interpersonal skills
    • Team player, as well as an individual worker with a strong and effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strategic planning of Plant capacity
    • Experience in budget preparation and reporting
    • Recognised as a leader capable of driving manufacturing excellence


    Desirable

    • Knowledge of imports and exports
    • SA and UK Food industry expertise
    • SA & UK Retail experience
    • Experience with Syspro or other MRP’s

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Financial Responsibility - budgeting acumen
    • Great communication and analytical skills
    • Leadership and Technical skills appropriate to food manufacturing
    • Database, Excel and similar software
    • HACCAP, CCP, GMP
