Our client is a well-established specialist logistics and engineering organisation seeking an experienced Head of Department: Abnormal Loads/ Transport to lead a team of approximately 25 employees and take full responsibility for the safe, efficient and profitable execution of abnormal load operations.
The ideal candidate will have strong abnormal load logistics experience, an in-depth understanding of permits, police clearances and route requirements, proven people management skills and a strong commercial focus with the ability to generate new business.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
Matric with a relevant tertiary qualification in Logistics, Operations, Transport, Engineering or a related field
Proven experience managing a team of 25+ employees
Strong knowledge and practical experience in abnormal load logistics, including permits, police clearances and route planning
Proven experience within the logistics, transport or contracting industry
Strong financial, operational and project management skills
Proven ability in business development, client relationship management and securing new business
Key Responsibilities
Lead, manage and develop a team of approximately 25 employees, driving performance, accountability and staff development.
Oversee the end-to-end planning and execution of abnormal load movements, ensuring safe, efficient and compliant operations.
Manage all abnormal load permits, police clearances, route planning and relevant regulatory documentation.
Ensure compliance with all applicable safety, legal and client requirements across operations and sites.
Manage subcontractors, suppliers, equipment and resources to ensure optimal utilisation and service delivery.
Take responsibility for departmental budgets, costing, expenditure, revenue and overall profitability.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing clients, ensuring high levels of customer service and repeat business.
Identify and secure new business opportunities, actively growing the abnormal loads division and client base.
Oversee quotations, proposals, project costing and commercial negotiations to maximise profitability.
Drive continuous improvement, operational efficiency, asset utilisation and a strong zero-injury safety culture within the department.
