    Head of Prevention

    THE JOB AT GLANCE

    Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Prevention will be accountable for the development and implementation of the Prevention strategy. The role will further be responsible for creating, directing and reviewing comprehensive programmes and interventions that advocate for safety and health practices and behaviours in response to several regulatory and strategic thrusts while delivering a sustainable value proposition to both employers and employees. The incumbent will be responsible for providing strategic direction and evaluation of all the prevention strategies and activities and fostering sustainable interdisciplinary collaboration towards achieving the goal of successful and cost-effective prevention for customers.

    WHAT WILL YOU DO?

    1. OPERATIONAL AND FUNCTIONAL MANAGEMENT

     

    1.1. Strategy Development and Implementation

     

    - Accountable for the development and implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Prevention Strategy and programme, including the Financial Wellness element.

    - Develop a sound prevention programme that contributes to enhanced employee productivity for employers and improved wellness for employees, including financial wellness.

    - Accountable for driving and creating awareness of prevention programmes at the employer level through training and engaging in stakeholder OHS conferences and workshops.

    - Provide subject matter expertise to the Health & Safety Programs as required, as well as develop Creating an OHS Award with clear criteria.

     

    1.2. Prevention Management

    - Accountable for the development of the Prevention capability and formulate associated practices to ensure the effective operational implementation as it relates to the Prevention function.

    - Accountable for managing various stakeholders to ensure effective contribution to Health and Safety and Financial Wellness Programmes.

     

    2. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

    - Accountable for the planning and compilation of an annual budget aligned to the delivery plans to support the implementation of set objectives.

    - Accountable for the overall performance of the Prevention function to deliver within a set budget.

    Accountable for budget implementation, deployment of proper financial controls, monitoring, reporting on any variances of the departmental budget.

     

     

    3. RISK MANAGEMENT

    - Accountable for the mitigation of the Prevention departmental risk profile as well as implementing sound governance and compliance processes to identify, manage and mitigate risks.

    - Implement Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and other controls and encourage the sharing of risk assessments.

    - Accountable for the mitigation of the Prevention departmental risk profile as well as implementing sound governance and compliance processes to identify, manage and mitigate risks.

    - Develop a clear Occupational Health and Safety Policy that drives the prevention programme based on the provisions of the OHS Act.

    - Contribute expertise to the development of legislation, standards, guidelines, operational policies and procedures in relation to health and safety.

    - Delivery of Prevention services and ensuring that compliance, regulatory and legal obligations are met across all interactions.

     

    4. LEADERSHIP AND PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

    - Build and lead an effective productive and cohesive specialist team and implement effective succession planning, people management, development, resourcing, and retention strategies for the department.

     

    5. STAKEHOLDER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

    - Build and maintain effective working relationships with various internal and external stakeholders, with the ability to influence key stakeholders and drive the delivery of Prevention initiatives

    - Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders (unions, industry bodies, specialists and partners) to ensure successful implementation and maintenance of the prevention programme.

     

    6. SHARE BEST PRACTICE AND ENSURE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

    - Apply best practice, develop continuous improvement plans and make recommendations.

    - Develop plans and offer insight and knowledge to the organisation on the use of new tools and technologies.

    - Provide guidance on and propose and develop a metric to be used for the rollout of the prevention programme for members, based on the reported injuries and diseases in Class XIII, including the Financial Wellness Plan

    - Develop world class reporting tools/dashboards in collaboration with the Strategy and Analytics team.

    - Provide feedback to COID and Operations Management on prevention programme success rates.

    - Monthly reporting on management status and progress.

     

     

    WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE TABLE?

    Required Minimum Qualification:

    - NQF Level 8 or 9: Hons / Master’s Degree in Engineering, including electronic/electrical, mechanical/Environmental Health/ Environmental Science/Occupational Hygiene

    Experience:

    - Minimum 8 – 10 years’ experience in a health and safety environment, human factors or ergonomics

    Knowledge:

    - A high level of knowledge and expertise in the systems and regulations governing occupational health and safety

    - A strong knowledge of and experience with identification and management of organisational factors that impact health and safety in the workplace

    - Demonstrated ability and experience in the development of initiatives that aim to influence the behaviour or actions of others.

    - Demonstrated ability and experience in the development of policies, legislation and guidelines in relation to prevention

    - Up-to-date working knowledge of the OHS Act and Regulations, COIDA,

    Skills:

    - Exceptional communication skills: Listening, verbal and written

    - Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

    - Diagnostic, analytic, and problem-solving skills.
