The Engineer 2, Occupational Safety, working under general supervision and acting as a contributing team member, is responsible for applying technical safety standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to assist with solutions for occupational safety problems of moderate scope and complexity, such as hazard control and prevention, safety systems and equipment, compliance, risk, etc. with consistency in a timely manner.
The role would support the plant-wide safety processes such as the company’s Safety Operating System (SOS) with the application of technical standards, principles, theories, and concepts.
The role supports plant-wide safety processes including emergency procedure and planning, off-standard approvals and understanding, injury reporting and statistics, etc.
The role would also work with senior engineers and managers to contribute to the completion of milestones within specific projects as per function priorities.
Supports the implementation of the plant-wide safety processes including safety operating system, emergency response planning, safety training, and injury reporting and statistics.
Supports regular inspections and audits to identify and assess workplace hazards and risks and related issues such as monitoring safety equipment and systems, hazard identification and risk evaluation, engineering principles, preventive maintenance completion, and technical documentation.
Assists with industrial hygiene sampling and testing across the responsible facility calibrates and maintains associated testing equipment and communicates results to the relevant stakeholders.
Assists with analysis and review of plant requests for new equipment, off-standard approvals, digging and excavation, hot work etc. for safety concerns, and highlights findings to senior engineers.
Analyzes safety incidents, corrective actions, training hours etc. to report trends to senior Health and Safety management, regulatory compliance, and onsite plant management team.
Supports the development of company policies and practices to complete daily activities related to supporting, sustaining, and improving all safety programs, risk mitigation, investigations, reporting, etc. Liaises with the plant and network medical, security functions, and UAW Health & Safety Representatives.
Assists with the design and implementation of training programs across departments on the technical aspects of occupational safety issues such as hazardous materials management, machine guarding, industrial hygiene monitoring, manufacturing process safety, energy control, power lockout, root cause analysis, fire safety, new employee orientation etc. to prevent employee injuries and illnesses and the elimination of hazards in the work environment. Supports and actively participates with the training leader and operations to manage and ensure completion of all required health, safety, and ergonomic-related training.
Assists senior engineers in the delivery of internal Occupational Safety projects by applying technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to devise solutions to a variety of safety problems of moderate scope and complexity and contributes to the completion of project milestones. Recognizes when there is insufficient information to solve problems and brings the same to the attention of others.
Assists senior team members with the preparation of Occupational Safety-specific communications and standards as per established processes to encourage the adoption of Safety practices, focused on incident avoidance and regulatory compliance.
Assists senior engineers, specialists, and managers to regularly update existing Occupational Safety specific guidelines and procedures related to occupational health and safety in the workplace, hazardous materials management, industrial hygiene monitoring, equipment safety systems etc. to ensure consistency with technical safety principles, relevant laws and Corporate Safety and Health policies.

Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Safety/Health Sciences, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of occupational safety work experience with a degree or 2 years of work experience with a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, or a related field.
