Intermediate Software Developer at Salt South Africa

Role Overview

• We are looking for an Intermediate Software Developer to join a telecommunications-focused environment, supporting the development, enhancement and secure delivery of customised software solutions.
• The role will suit a hands-on developer with approximately 3-5 years’ experience who is comfortable working across backend development, APIs, integrations and microservices. Previous exposure to telecommunications, VAS or messaging environments would be highly advantageous.
• You will work across the full software development lifecycle, contributing to scalable customer-facing solutions while supporting production stability, integrations and emerging technology initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain robust, scalable and secure software components.
• Participate across the full SDLC, including requirements, design, development, testing, deployment and support.
• Develop and maintain customised modules, APIs and system integrations.
• Build and support RESTful APIs, SOAP services and microservices-based solutions.
• Investigate and resolve bugs and production issues, including root cause analysis.
• Conduct and participate in code reviews.
• Apply secure software development practices, including authentication, authorisation and data protection.
• Monitor and optimise application performance, availability and scalability.
• Maintain clear technical and system documentation.
• Work closely with technical leads, project teams and other cross-functional stakeholders.
• Support third-party and vendor integrations where required.
• Contribute to Agile/Scrum ceremonies and delivery estimations.
• Support the integration of AI capabilities and emerging technologies where applicable.

Essential Technical Requirements

• Approximately 3-5 years of commercial software development experience.
• Strong development experience in at least one of:
• Java
• Golang / Go
• Python
• Experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs.
• Understanding of microservices architecture and integration patterns.
• Experience with SQL / relational databases, ideally MySQL.
• Experience using Git or equivalent version-control tools.
• Understanding of secure coding principles, including:
• Authentication
• Authorisation
• Data security / encryption
• Experience supporting customer-facing or production software environments.
• Understanding of the full software development lifecycle.

Highly Advantageous
Experience within telecommunications or telecom operators, particularly exposure to:

• VAS / Value Added Services
• Messaging platforms
• SMS / USSD
• SS7
• SIP
• Telecom integrations and platforms

Additional exposure to the following would also be beneficial:

• Docker
• Kubernetes
• Jenkins / CI/CD
• AWS, Azure or GCP
• Prometheus
• Grafana
• Kafka / asynchronous messaging
• AI/ML tools or platforms
• Agile / Scrum delivery environments

Qualifications
A relevant qualification in one of the following would be advantageous:
