Junior Architectural Designer at Phakisa Group

Position Overview

• We are looking for a Junior Architectural Designer to join our team in Lanseria, Johannesburg. The successful candidate will be involved in the design and planning of commercial kitchens, working closely with the senior design and project teams. The ideal candidate will have a Degree in Architecture and a strong interest in design, space planning, and technical drawings. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to develop their architectural skills within the commercial kitchen and equipment industry.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the design and layout of commercial and industrial kitchens.
• Develop detailed kitchen layouts based on client requirements and available space.
• Prepare accurate 2D and 3D drawings and technical plans.
• Assist with the placement and positioning of kitchen equipment within the design.
• Ensure that kitchen layouts make practical use of available space and allow for efficient workflow.
• Assist with preparing detailed drawings for manufacturing, installation, and project teams.
• Take measurements and assist with site surveys when required.
• Make amendments to drawings based on client requirements and project changes.
• Work closely with the sales, project, and installation teams to ensure designs are practical and achievable.
• Assist with selecting and positioning kitchen equipment according to project requirements.
• Prepare drawings and presentations for client discussions.
• Ensure drawings are accurate and completed within project deadlines.
• Maintain and update project drawings and documentation.
• Attend site visits when required to assess existing layouts and installation requirements.
• Assist senior designers and project managers with various projects.

Minimum Requirements

• Degree in Architecture or a relevant architectural qualification.
• Strong interest in commercial kitchen design, interior layouts, or space planning.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD is required.
• Knowledge of Revit, SketchUp, or other 3D design software will be advantageous.
• Good understanding of architectural drawings and technical plans.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to understand client requirements and translate them into practical designs.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.
• Good computer literacy.
• Willingness to learn and develop within the commercial kitchen industry.
• A valid driver's license will be advantageous due to possible site visits.

Ideal Candidate

• The ideal candidate will be creative, technically minded, and detail-oriented, with an interest in designing practical and functional kitchen spaces. They should be able to understand how a kitchen operates and consider factors such as workflow, equipment placement, space utilization, and functionality when developing designs. The candidate must be comfortable working with different teams and communicating with clients, suppliers, contractors, and project teams. The client is open to considering candidates who have recently graduated from university. The main requirement is that the candidate has the required degree in Architecture, is willing to learn, and shows a genuine interest in developing their knowledge and skills within the commercial kitchen design environment. Previous experience is therefore not essential, provided the candidate has the right qualification, a willingness to learn, and a keen interest in growing within the role.
