    Junior Student Counsellor

    Requirements:

    • Honours Degree in Psychology / B. Psychology 
    • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) 
    • Valid Driver’s Licence 

    Purpose of the job: 

    • Give counselling to clients experiencing minor problems, assessment administration, monitor and assist interns with psychometric testing/administration as well as information acquisition, storage, retrieval and dissemination. 

    Duties:
    Give Counselling to clients with minor problems 

    • Screening
    • Debriefing and Counselling 
    • Referring to professional student counsellors (psychologists) and other professionals 

    Career development, graduate placement, entrepreneurship training, internship training and vacation employment 

    • Search and collect information about various companies 
    • Send invitations to those companies for recruitment purposes 
    • Establish professional relationships with companies 
    • Provide students with information on different careers 
    • Conduct workshops on career development (job hunting skills, interviewing skills, cv writing) 
    • Prepare students for the world of work 

    Psychometric assessments 

    • Assist administrative assistant with the storage of psychometric records 
    • Administer psychometric assessments to clients at the Centre and during community and school outreach 
    • Administer the psychometric assessments to the clients referred by the staff of the Centre
    • Monitor psychometric work of interns at the Centre 
    • Assist interns with the administration, scoring and interpretation of psychometric assessments 

    Managing the Resource Centre/ Information acquisition and dissemination to students community 

    • Acquire information from various sources such as journals, internet, books, newspapers, magazines, other institutions, companies, periodicals, manuals, electronic media, brochures and professional bodies. 
    • Distribute information to residences, lecture theatres and other public places. 
    • Purchase newspapers, books and equipment for the Resource Centre. 
    • Post important information from newspapers on the notice board. 
    • Update bulletin boards for the Centre. 
    • Making sure that students acquire enough information regarding job opportunities, bursaries, scholarships, vacation employment, internships, etc. 
    • Purchase the software material and equipment (computers) to be utilized in the Resource Centre. 
    • Benchmark with other Resource Centre managers from other institutions to keep CSCD’s Resource Centre updated. 
    • Liaise with relevant stakeholders for effective way of information dissemination. 

    School and Community Engagement 

    • Carry out need analysis 
    • Conduct career assessments, career guidance and general life skills workshops to high school learners as well as the youth from the communities 
    • Arrange travelling and catering for the Peer Counsellors and staff members attending those workshops 
    • Liaise with people requesting Centre for Student Counselling and Development’s services (career guidance, career assessments, general life etc.) 
    • Arrange psychological assessments to be used with the assistance of CSCD’s documentalist 
    • Conduct psychological assessments to community members 
    • Provide counselling to clients referred from the communities 

    Research

    • Conduct research for the provision of a sound basis for professional activities as well as contribution to the scientific knowledge in the field of human behavior 
    • Conduct research to keep abreast of new developments in the field of psychology and related fields 
    • Conduct research for the Centre to have a better understanding of ou 

    Counselling and Psychotherapy 

    • Psychometric assessment 
    • Intensive counselling and psychotherapy for students with serious personal problems 
    • Establishment of an extensive referral network for students both inside and outside the University 
    • Development and implementation of preventive programmes relating to a variety of psycho-social difficulties facing youth at tertiary educational institutions 

    Management of professional office 

    • Filing and record keeping in terms of prescribed standards 
    • Upkeep and use of equipment and technology to enhance counselling and psychotherapeutic work 
    • Ensuring that quarterly, annual and clients reports are submitted on time 
    • Marketing the Centre within and outside the University community 

    Training and development of interns and students 

    • Supervising students registered for internships 
    • Conducting academic skills development and general life skills workshops to 
    • Developing and implementing programmes for peer counsellors and students with disabilities

    Career development, graduate placement, entrepreneurship training and vacation employment

    • Ensuring that companies recruit students prior to their graduation 
    • Ensuring that students learn how to market themselves to the prospective employers 
    • Implementing work readiness programme for all final year students 
    • Collection, storage, retrieval and dissemination of career and other types of information through electronic media 

    Community Engagement 

    • Developing and empowering communities through outreach programmes 
    • Delivering psychological services to the disadvantaged communities 
    • Assisting with student recruitment and selection 
    • Acting as consultant to Life Orientation and Remedial teachers in the surrounding schools
