Relevant three-year tertiary qualification majoring in an appropriate language or language practice
Eight (8) years or more relevant experience, with managerial experience
Knowledge of legislation pertaining to language practitioners
Knowledge of relevant local government policies, legislative systems and processes
Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office
It will be an added advantage if the applicant can speak all three of the official languages of the Western Cape and has an understanding of South African sign language.
Key Performance Areas
Manage and oversee the Language Services Unit through providing advice, language technical knowledge regarding interpretation and translation services
Draft specifications and ensure management of tenders and contracts for the Language Services Unit
Render and ensure effective and timeous translation services to the City departments
Render interpretation services in Xhosa, Afrikaans, English and Sign Language to ensure seamless proceedings at official and public meetings
Foster and ensure that multilingualism is promoted in the City and area of jurisdiction
Ensure management, mentoring and coaching of staff within the unit
Oversee research and liaison with external stakeholders in the implementation of the Language Policy
Manage and oversee the compilation and expenditure of the CAPEX and OPEX budget for the unit, and ensure compliance with the MFMA and financial regulations
Undertake research regarding Language Services to ensure alignment to national and international best practices
Participate in national and international benchmarking exercises
Attend conferences and seminars with other language
