    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

    The School of Pharmacy at the University of the Western Cape is one of the leading institutions for the education of pharmacists in South Africa and the only Pharmacy school in the Western Cape. We are proud of our strong patient and service-orientated education, which builds on a sound scientific base and active research programmes. Pharmacy Practice is a key discipline in our education programme with active involvement within external communities at local and national level and growing practice-related research programmes.

    The School of Pharmacy intends to appoint an experienced Academic Pharmacist to complement and enhance its teaching and research effort in Pharmacy Practice.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

    • Facilitate learning and teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
    • Conduct research and postgraduate supervision;
    • Contribute to community engagement and outreach;
    • Manage academic administration;
    • Actively participate in curriculum development and assessment.

    Minimum Requirements

    • An MSc or MPharm in Pharmacy Practice or closely related field.
    • Experience in practice and/or teaching in pharmacy practice.
    • Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council as Pharmacist.
    • Demonstrated competence in facilitating learning at undergraduate level.
    • Record of research or participation in ongoing research.

    Required competencies: 

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
    • Coaching and mentoring skills;
    • Engaging and developing undergraduate and postgraduate students;
    • Planning and organising skills;
    • Time management skills.

    Added advantage and preferences: 

    • A PhD in Pharmacy Practice or closely related field;
    • A track record of research projects and securing research funding;
    • Experience in the following key areas would be beneficial: Forensic pharmacy, Pharmacoeconomics, pharmacy and medicine management, social pharmacy and public health.
    • Active collaborations and partnerships within the public and/or private pharmacy environment.
