    Lecturer Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies

    REQUIREMENTS FOR ROLE WITH A FOCUS IN ACTING:

    • A PhD or Masters (MA) in Theatre and/or Performance Studies in a cognate field. In the case of an MA, the candidate would need to show a strong commitment to advancing meaningfully in their PhD studies (for example an existing registration for the PhD in Theatre and/or Performance Studies or a cognate field
    • Ability to teach in English, and bilingual proficiency in any Nguni language or Afrikaans
    • A proven track record in teaching Acting and Contemporary Performance to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
    • A proven track record in teaching theatre voice and movement.
    • A proven track record in lecturing academic aspects of Theatre and Performance Studies to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a particular focus on contemporary performance.
    • A proven track record of making and directing both professional and student theatre productions.
    • A proven track record of research (inclusive of creative works) in Theatre and Performance Studies, and a commitment to postgraduate supervision in contemporary performance practice, with a focus on performance within the South African context and a broadened African context.
    • Demonstrated administrative abilities (for example, course design and administration) within the context of a tertiary institution.

    ADVANTAGEOUS FOR ROLE WITH A FOCUS IN ACTING:

    • Demonstrated leadership (for example, course convenorship) within the context of a tertiary institution
    • Familiarity with student and/or course management software
    • The capacity to engage and facilitate the expansion of the CTDPS’s networks into the broader African Continent and taking UCT’s mission of being a world-class African university seriously.

    REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROLE WITH A FOCUS IN THEATRE-MAKING:

    • A PhD or Masters in Theatre and/or Performance Studies in a cognate field. In the case of an MA, the candidate would need to show a strong commitment to advancing meaningfully in their PhD studies (for example an existing registration for the PhD in Theatre and/or Performance Studies or a cognate field)
    • A proven track record in teaching Mime, Physical Theatre, Performance-Making, Directing and Devising to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
    • A proven track record in teaching puppetry, object theatre and movement for actors.
    • A proven track record in lecturing academic aspects of Theatre and Performance Studies to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a particular focus on contemporary performance.
    • A proven track record of making and directing both professional and student theatre productions.
    • A proven track record of research (inclusive of creative works) in Theatre and Performance Studies, and a commitment to postgraduate supervision in contemporary performance practice, with a focus on performance within the South African context and a broadened African context.
    • Demonstrated administrative abilities (for example, course design and administration) within the context of a tertiary institution.

    RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BOTH ROLES:

    • Planning, implementing, coordinating and teaching both theory and practice across all four undergraduate years and at postgraduate level.
    • Supervising postgraduate research
    • Directing student Productions
    • Leadership and Administration
    • Convenorship of courses
    • Research
    • Social Responsiveness
