    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

    • A Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and learning:

    • Teaching introductory and advance level courses to diverse student body
    • Conduct tutorials, practical classes, and workshops
    • Initiation and development of subject material
    • Development of course with appropriate advice from and support of more senior employees
    • Consultation with students
    • Preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars
    • Supervision of honours students
    • Contribute to curricula revision to reflect the latest trends in the field and to build
    • Curriculum development
    • Compilation of assessments and student marks.

    Development and Supervision:

    • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
    • Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work
    • Teaching activities include initiation and development of unit materials and may include the supervision of honours and research students.

    Social responsiveness and industry involvement:

    • Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.
    • The conduct of research.
    • Involvement in professional activity.
    • Scholarly work
    • Conducting research for publication.
    • Supervision of honours research projects.
    • Pursuing his/her PhD studies.
    • Attending research workshops.
    • Writing for publication
    • Attending conferences
    • Participation in research projects with colleagues.

    Development of Course materials:

    • Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior employees.
    • Marking and assessment.
    • Consultation with students.

    Community Engagement

    • Provide service to the community.
    • Provide service to the institution through the service of various committees.
    • Provide service to our external stakeholders as per departmental agreement.
    • Contribute to faculty, school and departmental committees.

    Minimum requirements

    LECTURER:

    • A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Transport Economics, Logistics Management, Supply Chain and Transport Studies.
    • A minimum of 2 year’ teaching experience.

    JUNIOR LECTURER:

    • An honour’s degree (NQF level 8) in Transport Economics, Logistics Management, Supply Chain and Transport Studies.
    • A minimum of 1 year’ teaching experience.

    RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES:

    • Research publication in an accredited journal.
    • Conference proceedings as well as postgraduate supervision.
    • Membership with professional bodies such as the Society of Association Professionals in the Industrial & Supply Chain (SAPICS), Road Accident Fund (RAF) and other related professional bodies.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Knowledge of Mathematics Transport Economics, Logistics Management, Supply Chain, and Transport Studies at postgraduate level.
    • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), email and internet.
    • Knowledge of transport policies, supply chain and logistics trends, and research conducted in the said field.
    • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.

    Research outputs

    • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
    • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

    • Effective time-management skills.
    • Effective communication skills.
    • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
    • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.

    • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.
    • The ability to solve problems independently.
    • Good Time-management and problem-solving skills.
    • Good planning and organising skills as well as good report writing skills.
    • A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
