    Job description

     

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • The purpose of the position is to facilitate high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment in Setswana, while contributing to scholarly activity, curriculum development, and community engagement within the School/Faculty. The lecturer is responsible for promoting linguistic competence, cultural understanding, and academic excellence in Setswana language education, aligned with institutional and national higher-education goals.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning

    • Present undergraduate and/or postgraduate modules in Setswana language, linguistics, literature, or language education.
    • Develop and update study guides, learning materials, and assessments.
    • Apply student-centred, multilingual and inclusive teaching practices.
    • Monitor and support student academic success and progression.
    • Ensure quality assessment practices aligned with institutional policies.             

    Research and Innovation

    • Conduct research within the field of Setswana language, literature, linguistics, or language education.
    • Produce accredited research outputs (journal articles, conference papers, etc.).
    • Participate in research projects and scholarly communities.
    • Supervise postgraduate students where applicable.

    Community Engagement and Language Promotion

    • Contribute to initiatives that promote Setswana and multilingualism.
    • Engage with schools, communities, or professional bodies to support language development and education.
    • Apply academic expertise in socially relevant contexts.

    Academic Administration and Leadership

    • Participate in subject group and School meetings.
    • Perform administrative duties related to modules and programmes.
    • Contribute to quality assurance, moderation, and accreditation processes.
    • Support institutional initiatives and academic citizenship.

    Minimum requirements

    • A master’s degree in Education (MEd) specialising in Language Education, with specific expertise in Setswana (NQF Level 9).
    • A minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience in language teaching, specifically Setswana, at secondary school level and/or tertiary level as a lecturer (excluding tutoring experience).
    • Registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    Knowledge: 

    • Advanced disciplinary knowledge in Setswana language, linguistics, literature and/or language education.
    • Sound knowledge of higher education teaching, learning and assessment practices.
    • Understanding of curriculum development and alignment with NQF/HEQSF and institutional requirements.
    • Knowledge of multilingual education, language policy, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
    • Understanding of research methodologies relevant to language and education studies.
    • Knowledge of quality assurance, moderation and academic standards in higher education.

    Skills:

    • Ability to facilitate effective teaching and learning in face-to-face, blended, and/or online environments.
    • Strong academic writing and research skills.
    • Competence in assessment design, marking and feedback aligned with learning outcomes.
    • Curriculum design and module development skills.
    • Ability to supervise and guide postgraduate students (where applicable).
    • Effective communication skills in Setswana and English (verbal and written).
    • Digital literacy and ability to use learning management systems and educational technologies.
    • Strong organisational and academic administration skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

    REMUNERATION:

    The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
